I'm sceptical about whether the rules can be enforced without back-doors but I think in that case it would only work if the Sheik paid the money direct. It could not be paid by City if it caused them to lose more than £38m for 3 years from I think 2012.

while i don't pretend to have read the new rules inside and out, I am sure people like Roman and the SHeikh have bent the rules in all forms of thir businesses before I don't see why the new laws would be any different?

Creative accountancy would be able to ensure that there are ways around new laws? or do you actually believe that this really will stop the Citys of the world?

I heard that for instance players wages had to be a certain percentage of turnover? well why can't one of the sheikh's other companies sponsor the club's car park for £100million and therefore allowing another x on wages?

stupid example but you get my point?

One of the Sheikhs other companies could be for example their new shirt sponsor to the tune of £100m a year.

Nothing that anyone could do to stop that.

They could buy executive boxes for £100m a year.

There are some ways to get around it.

they discussed this a while back on bbc five about the same time as the whole takeover saga.

To put it simply city or real or anyclub can't all of a sudden just come out with we have 100m a year sponsor as uefa have placed rules on sponsorship. It has to get be market rate and a reflection of some sorts on previous years. So if utd and us get 15m a year for shirt sponsorship as the 2 biggest clubs in this country. City can't say they've got a 100m a year deal, same with stadium sponsors etc

renaming clubs grounds is a new phenomen in the uk so there was no previous agreements to guage the right amount till say Arsenal ( if they were first)

City could do a whole raft of new sponsorship deals that have not been done before to increase revenue?

they could do. i'd be surprised if there is anything new out there as the red mancs have pretty much got everything covered, from condoms to mobile phones to increase revenue streams. etc, i suppose city could just spend aload of their own cash buying up their own shirts especially kaka, ronaldo and rooney ones. It will be intresting to see if uefa really do enforce their own rules.

The rules actually aim to prevent sponsorship from linked companies. How enforceable that is we shall see.

Roy doesn't help himself with his canny knack of spouting silly things:

"For me, Pepe Reina is one of the most committed players I have at the club. He's one who I never have any doubts about his desire to get on the field, give his best and win the game for the club. That's the most important thing."

He's basically inferring that he has doubts over the desire of one or more of his players. I know he's probably not saying that, he's merely saying Reina's 100% committed and focused and ultra professional but.... with spin he's potentially fed the media another story there.

Time will tell. Someone will probably go to court sooner or later about it. UEFA and FIFA tried to stop many things but almost always ends up losing the big cases.

the last thing football - uefa &fifa would want is an enron style scandel with dodgy financial deals and book keeping. You'll end up with pompey situations every year

Yeah whether he means it or not he doesn't help himself. He thinks he's clever and articulate, and unfortunately he's not. He's got dreadful verbal diarrhoea. If he was a bit more concise and succinct he'd obviously lessen the chances of him putting his foot in it, but he's asked a question and 12 minutes later he's still waffling on and on.................and on and on and on he ****ing goes. It's inevitable he'll drop a clanger sooner or later, and he always does.
