Blackburn Rovers 3 Liverpool FC 1 - Roy Hodgson heading for Anfield exit

THE last time Roy Hodgson was shown the door at a Premier League club, it came after a dismal defeat at Ewood Park.

And after this latest depressing, demoralising, disgraceful reverse, it is impossible to shake the feeling the same fate now awaits the Liverpool manager.

Moments after the third goal from injury-hit Blackburn Rovers struck the back of Pepe Reina's net last night, the chant of “you're getting sacked in the morning” echoed from the home end.

But it was the sound of the same song then emanating from the travelling support that will have resonated across the Atlantic in the direction of Liverpool owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner.

Clearly, the paying Liverpool fans have seen enough. And as much as it is against their very fabric to belittle their club's manager, emotions that have been bubbling ever since Hodgson assumed control have now boiled over.

Hodgson's 18-month reign at Blackburn was abruptly ended in November 1998 in the wake of a home defeat against Southampton that left Rovers stranded at the foot of the table.

Liverpool, despite their worst start to a top-flight campaign in 57 years, aren't quite in that same predicament, but their slide into overpowering mediocrity is so alarming – they stand only five points off the foot of the table this morning and a mammoth 19 adrift of the leaders – that surely something has to be done.

It now appears a matter of when and not if. The whispers of an imminent departure are reaching a crescendo, with names such as Ralf Rangnick, Frank Rijkaard, Guus Hiddink, Andre Villas-Boas, Didier Deschamps and, of course, Kenny Dalglish jostling for position in an ever-lengthening list of possible replacements.

With the FA Cup third round tie at Manchester United only three days away, Fenway Sports Group may resist pulling the trigger and leaving the team rudderless going into such a pivotal game.

But given a busy January in which the home derby against Everton looms large on Sunday week, can they continue entrusting Hodgson with the keys to their £300million investment?

Hodgson is an honest – in some respects, too honest – and decent man, but just hasn't connected with the Liverpool support since replacing Rafael Benitez six months ago.

Having voiced their approval during the shocking home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers last week, the fans voted with their feet three days later with an Anfield attendance almost 10,000 below capacity for the visit of Bolton Wanderers.

Empty seats were again a talking point last night with the away end at Blackburn – normally one of the most popular fixtures for Liverpool's travelling fans – significantly less than full.

And with the news, much to the chagrin of Anfield officials, that the Sparta Prague home Europa League game next month will kick-off at 6pm on a Thursday only gives further reason for disgruntled and cash-strapped followers to stay at home and watch on television.

Let's face it, the derby isn't even sold out yet. That's right. The derby.

Those fans are hurting. For every song mocking Hodgson last night, there was a louder, more emotive chant reminding everyone of their unwavering support of Liverpool and the glories of the recent past.

The present, though, is anything but. This was a third defeat in four, a fifth in nine league games, and a ninth in their first 20 leagues matches, Liverpool's highest total at that stage of a campaign since 1953.

This wasn't the way for Steven Gerrard to celebrate a landmark 550th Liverpool outing that moved him into the top 10 of the club's all-time appearances list.

The skipper was one of very few players in red that could be absolved from blame for a defeat that means the Anfield outfit have won only two of their last 19 away league games – losing seven of 10 this campaign.

To think this was almost a Blackburn reserve team, with Rovers manager Steve Kean missing five first-team regulars – and eight players in total – due to injury, suspension and Asian Cup commitments.

Individual errors gifted the home side their two-goal lead at half-time and gave Liverpool a mountain they never looked remotely like scaling.

It all started to go wrong in the 32nd minute. With Joe Cole having gone missing down the right flank, all it took was a simple forward pass from Manchester United loanee Mame Diouf that Glen Johnson inexplicably thought held no danger to send Martin Olsson into space inside the area and slip a shot between the legs of Pepe Reina.

Six minutes later, after a clipped pass into the box by Morten Gamst Pedersen, Sotirios Kyrgiakos showed a surprising lack of strength by letting Benjani turn and blast a shot over the top of an increasingly fed-up Reina.

Blackburn should have been ahead earlier, Diouf twice striking at Reina from decent positions.

Liverpool, though, were not without their chances and actually started the game the brighter, their best chance coming on 27 minutes when Cole, after being fed by Johnson, hit an angled shot close enough to Mark Bunn to allow the Blackburn goalkeeper to touch the ball behind.

Cole also saw a shot deflected over before Martin Skrtel summed up Liverpool's first half when his shot almost sent the ball out of the stadium.

The second half got no better. On 58 minutes, Junior Hoilett bundled his way through Skrtel and Johnson on the byline and crossed for Benjani, Blackburn's fourth-choice striker, to prod home at the near post.

To their credit, Liverpool – and Gerrard in particular – at least kept going until the end, even if it was too little, too late.

Fernando Torres volleyed over and Cole solicited a save from Bunn from range, but there was no celebrating when Gerrard hammered home a fine drive with eight minutes remaining.

And Liverpool's dreadful night was made complete when, four minutes later, the skipper skied a spot kick after being felled by Michel Salgado.

It put the visitors out of their misery. Hodgson may now soon be put out of his

I logged out almost straight after the game and didn't watch the news. I'm gutted that he hasn't been sacked yet
