Average net spend per season 2006-2010 (figures accurate as of 10th August 2010):
    Man City £65.8m
    Spurs £16.5m
    Villa £16.5m
    Sunderland £13.6m
    Liverpool £9.4m
    Chelsea £2.6m
    Man Utd £0.6m
    Arsenal IN PROFIT £6m

Chelsea had already spend some £200m and were set. The mancs had already had their years of spending £30m on a player, and doing it on a few occasions. Is it any wonder Villa, City and Spurs overtook us??
Them figures are a bit misleading. They are based soley on transfer fees in/out. They do not take into account, new contracts for existing players, contracts of new players and signing on fees/bonuses. Them factors are all included in a clubs transfer budget.

So even this season, Joe Cole will have got a big signing on bonus as he was a free transfer, possibly a couple of million. That all effects your outgoings.

my rant is just getting longer!

          next 7 league games are......

blackburn at home - lets just say we somehow win - 3 points
bolton away - no chance - 0 points
chelsea home - no chance - 0 points
          wigan away - draw - 1 point
stoke away - miracle win - 3 points
relegation battle west ham home - draw - 3 point
spurs away - no chance - 0 points

that is about as good as i can see us getting from the next 7 games - which would take us too 16 points from 15 games
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

No other club takes the value of a contract, and subtracts it from their transfer budget. None.

              I bet they do internally.

The thing is we have for several years before last season been punching above our weight in terms of position verses wages. Unfortunately for us the tax rate changed just as we were going to have to renegotiate contracts after a successful season. I'm not convinced that the actions of the chancellor or the global markets can be blamed on Rafa, or even out former owners.

In general though I don't see why people want to bring contracts into it in terms of judging Rafa when ignoring it in any other context. Consistency is what is important.

Haha he was right when he said it though mate. Papers and the public are quick to just throw some numbers together and think they know the answer. The general jist is right but like i said the figure can be misleading. City for example will have spent much more than just the transfer figures because they havent been selling anyone to balance the books. I wish we had a sheikh

If we have £5m to spend on a player and we sign someone for £4m then if his wages and signing on fee for that year are over £1m then your screwed.

So Carra's new 2 year contract extension - you think other clubs take the value of that out of their transfer budget?

                    I dont.

I'm pretty sure that there is a more complicated calculation than that, but I would think that every club (City excepted) does a calculation of what the transfer budget is after looking at other outgoings, and thinks about the wages of players coming in as well as the increase in wage bills. They are businesses after all.

All the above goes out the window if Redknapp is manager obviously.

                          Last 3 seasons:

(Jovo) Never Played for Rafa, could have been a success.
MaxiPad Played well after he settled in under e decent manager
Glen Johnson Going rate for an England International, was brilliant before his injury and many people thought £18m looked a steal.
Alberto Aquilani Big gamble, backfired. We were never gonn see teh best of him until this year anyway, and now we didn't even get the chance
Sotirios Kyrgiakos Decent buy considering the circumstances. I doubt if Rafa had £20m in the bank at the time Soto would be here.
Phillip Degen (Terrible player. Worth a punt as cover though)
Andrea Dossena (Great season in italy and fitted the bill for Rafa's new system that required attacking FB's. Didn't work out though)
Diego Cavalieri (Did the job required of him with mimimum fuss and got money back)
David N'Gog (LIke Soto, circumstances played a part, but looks a good deal and at the very least will be sold at a profit.)
Robert Keane (Maybe an excuse, but Rafa explained this and what happened with Barry.)
                          Péter Gulácsi
Albert Riera (Gave the team great balance and played big role in our best PL season. Turns out he's a cunt though.)
Martin Skrtel (Has the potential to be a good player, but confidence is shot to pieces.)
Andrey Voronin (Ruined by the Est Voronin fan club )
Krisztián Németh (Had all the talent, just didn't work out)
                          Nikolay Mihaylov
Lucas Pezzini Leiva (no point in opening that can of worms. )
                          Sebastián Eduardo Leto (Passport problems)
                          Mikel San José
                          Fernando Torres
Yossi Shai Benayoun (good signing and worth every penny.)
Ryan Guno Babel (A gamble that didn't work out. Showed potential first season though.)
                          Daniel Pacheco ()
Charles Itandje ( God you're right, you did deserve to go Rafa)
                          Mikel San José
                          Péter Gulácsi
                          Damien Plessis

                          .
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Bang on, I remember Rafa being asked about his spat with whiskey nose and Rafa said he didn't know what the problem was, they got on just fine when they (MU) were beating us.

Nobody fears Hodgson... we are currently a 3 pointer for everybody and that is down to the ineptitude of the current manager.

                              I know, but it should.

Obviously because its not made public knowledge due to privacy of the the players etc, you end up with misleading figures.

On a similar note, I noticed a fair amount of Everton fans getting Hodgson's autograph yesterday. Did they do that with Benitez? I don't know but I just can't picture it.
