I suspect the original post was badly phrased. Perhaps the idea is all goals since the opening day of the season have involved Torres and/or Gerrard, whether as the scorer or for the assist.

I'm not sure that's any clearer.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Yea yea,Ok I see it now but I originally read like all of our goals were either scored or assited by Torres and Gerrard meaning that no one else has even assisted apart from them.

Infact,it still bloody well reads the same.....mmmmm,I gota get some sleep me thinks!

Yeah, it is really difficult to phrase it unambiguously.

How many of our goals have come from set pieces? I imagine it's a substantial proportion so since Gerrard takes most of them that must skew the figures somewhat.

Clearly a lot of players have been underperforming but I'm not sure the worrying stat is quite as strong evidence of it as the original poster suggested.

I certainly didn't intend any ambiguity when I started the thread. I just copied and pasted it straight from the guardian website. I suppose they are always struggling to create 5 bulletpoints for each team, but this one stuck out for me as pinpointing our main problems this season.

I read it to mean that if Steve or Nando don't play, chances are we won't score. Good thing about it is, once something like this has been discussed, these stats have a habit of being broken - I'm expecting a goal from an unexpected source. Konchesky from a Lucas throughball or something.

also worried by the fact we dont score many from open play.

i am not surprised we dont have many other players who contribute. Dirk has been out so i expect he will change those stats somewhat.

however we need to build the team and get better players and have more options so i suppose its not telling me anything i didnt already think

I didn't think the ambiguity was intentional but people clearly misunderstood the statistic.

The only two goals we've scored away from home in the league were scored by Gerrard. So it would appear if Gerrard alone doesn't play then we won't score this afternoon. However since both of those were from dead balls (a free kick and a penalty) then you can read the 'fact' completely differently.

All I'm saying is that the real problem isn't that Gerrard or Torres are the only threats on goal, it's that we don't create enough chances, especially away from home.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
