Pacheco faces Anfield exit after missed opportunity

    By Ian Herbert
    Thursday, 25 November 2010

Liverpool are ready to reduce their wage bill in January with Daniel Pacheco, the 19-year-old Spaniard considered one of the Barcelona academy's rising stars when he signed three years ago, among those manager Roy Hodgson may be prepared to lose.

The failure to maintain academy players' development between 16 and 19 has been a recurrent theme at Liverpool in recent years and Pacheco has remained inconsistent. There is considerable interest in him from Spain – including Malaga and Espanyol – and Hodgson has made it clear that the striker missed a major opportunity to impress in Liverpool's Carling Cup defeat to Northampton Town in September. Hodgson said: "He featured in that unfortunate Northampton game and it's a fact of life that it was a great opportunity for those outside the first 13 or 14 to really show me, 'You should be thinking of me'."

There is also uncertainty about the Anfield futures of defender Daniel Agger, whose calf injury continues to worry medical staff, and Ryan Babel, who claimed bizarrely on Twitter yesterday that assistant manager Sammy Lee had ordered him to stop practising during the Benitez era. Babel, whom Malaga are also tracking, wrote: "I wasn't allowed to train extra under our former manager, even when I wasn't involved. I even tried to train extra by doing it secretly, but the assistant manager came to tell me to stop."

Dr Peter Brukner, Liverpool's head of sports science, said Agger's injury, sustained by a kick to the calf on international duty, had caused calcification to a blood clot. The Dane could be a target for a Bundesliga club.

Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

      **** sake!

Potentially letting players like Pacheco, and Agger go is crazy, absolutely crazy whilst signing 30 (ish) average players and keeping them on long contracts is clearly the way forwards.

"You had your chance to show me what you can do" attitude from one game this season shows the character of the man, small minded to go along with his tiny ambtions for LFC.

I utterly dispare with this man at the helm, if he's given cash in January he might be able to actually complete 2 windows of the worst transfer dealing in our history (this involves Cheyrou, Diao and Diouf remember!)

Pacheco is 19 and you're bemoaning the fact he hasn't learnt something you (as you're an expert) think he should have since the age of 16???

The same Pacheco who starred in the Euro U19's and was the top goalscorer in the summer yeah??

Jesus ****ing christ he is a young kid, reserve games are there for him to make mistakes in, he should also be making them in 'less pressure' first team games or out on loan.
That's what young players do, they make mistakes, learn from them and progress.
Pacheco should be encouraged to take on the difficult option and try and make things happen, his decision making will improve over time.

Now I'm not comparing Pacheco to Ronaldo but he was making mistakes and chosing the wrong options upto his last season or so at Man U and he's not a bad player is he.

Of course he could also be trying too hard after good ole uncle Roy banished him for one reason or another (no facts about that reason only rumours)

I'm not saying I'm an expert, it's my opinion. I've watched plenty of reserve games since Pacheco joined. When he first joined, he had a tendency to hold onto the ball too long. Mistakes are one thing, but hogging the ball is another thing. This was when he was 16. In 3 years, he still is doing the same thing: holding the ball too long. His passing hasn't improved either. Compare him to Bruna: he was labelled the next Messi and he has been pretty poor at reserve team level. But in 2/3 years Bruna has significantly improved although last season he didn't play many games for the reserves due to injury. His passing and set pieces were always amazing but he now seems a lot stronger, quicker and more skillful. Add to that he's playing now more as an orthodox winger and he's doing well there.

And by the way, plenty of players have starred at U19/U20 championships and gone on to flop. Anthony Le Tallec and Pongolle being two. Also Nabil El Zhar was voted the second best player at the 2005 World Youth Championship behind Lionel Messi - look at the gap in class between those two.

Haha, you know its not such a bad idea. IDK if it would get noticed in the Kop with all the flags etc but I might just get onto buying a piece of carboard and making it up before I leave. Nothing like getting on TV back home while overseas at my first LFC game
