United sell plenty of their best players, almost exclusively to Real, but they are just good at replacing them. I think if anything, united have shown that no player is bigger than the club really.
I knew someone would come back with the whole Drunken bacon face selling certain players like Beckham, Stam, Ince, Kanchelskis, van Nistelrooy. The marked difference is most of those players crossed the manager and they were gone.

Agger has not crossed our manager.

Ronaldo - well they got £80m - not exactly comparable.

United keep the core of their best players, unchallenged, for season after season.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

      Completely different situation.

But they did this while at the very top, we are trying to get there.

        edit: and what Shaggy said.

Selling a player to get a better one (in theory) in the same position is ok in my book; selling a player to fund other positions is daft unless there is justifiable upside.

We have just sent a clear signal out to every major club around Europe. If they want one of our players we are open to considering any offers. That is not how this club should operate.

I'm guessing the managerial change has massively affected the transfer budget. Seems a bit harsh and self defeating to immediately limit their own man with no cash to improve.

Another Aston Villa season then, ****s sake.

There's a reason we've finished 6th,7th and 8th. We've been selling our star performers for big bucks and not using the money very well when replacing them.

I Hope Rodgers is as good as Rafa was in spotting cheap players and improving them into much better players.

Do you not think the way football is now with agents and leaks to the press that every club would already be aware of our position?

It's hardly an unknown thing, it's a fact for pretty much every club in the world.

Mine too, especially if you make on the deal, it's a no brainer, but as you say, only in theory, carrying it out is the trick, and it's one of the hardest tricks in the game tbf.

We are publicly acknowledging this policy. Embarassing and not the Liverpool way of doing things.

True, but come on, advertising the fact could look to some like were more keen than usual to do so, which might make clubs look our way and at our better players.

The personal stories are different yes, but it still shows that it's not the end of the world selling 1 or 2 of your best players, either for footballing reasons or personal reasons. I don't really think it matters a whole lot to the argument why they leave tbh. it's just a case of how good a replacement you get or how the manager adapts the team.

Don't get me wrong, I'd much prefer keeping Agger here, think he is a brilliant player, but it's not the end of the football club if he left. I'm sure we would look for a good replacement. We still have the core of the team intact if we sell 1 of our best players, Agger, and the rest that have gone were fringe players last season.

****ing hell, depressing we apparently need to sell to raise funds.
