This is quite sad Agger says he's retired early due to an addiction to pain killers which started at Liverpool
Bild have reported a huge story today with Daniel Agger claiming that Liverpool giving him too many painkillers led to his early retirement.

He revealed that he had to retire for health reasons and these stemmed from the painkiller culture present at Anfield.

Agger said: “I have taken too many painkillers in my career. I know it, and that is bad. But I’ve stopped doing it now.”

He realised how big the problem had become when he was on the Brondby team bus on their way to face FC Copenhagen. Having taken arthritis pills with a caffeine drink, he didn’t remember any of the first half.

He later blacked out after being substituted with less than a half an hour played and had to confront what was essentially a ten year reliance on painkillers bordering on addiction.

He claims that he tried to stop taking drugs but that the club forced him to do it. After the Copenhagen debacle he said: “I’m done with this circus.”

That's a huge accusation to make. This story is going to run.

Hopefully it will get buried, so much other stuff at the moment with the Euros and English hooligans.

But i can see the tabloids headline - "Liverpool made me a drug addict"

I actually think it's been translated wrong. In the Danish papers he said that he never felt any pressure from his clubs but the competition amongst players etc. have created a culture where playing as many games as possible to keep your place in the team. Also mentioned that just about all players take arthritis medicine to get through some games.

                Pill popping

My brother in law used to play in the Championship and now plays in the Scottish Premiership and he has always popped anti inflammatory pills and strong painkillers before a match, he tells me they all do!
Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but does not actually get you anywhere.

When I was playing regular football. Half of us would be limping before the match. One of our players was a dentist he was an absolute master at giving us the right amount of local anesthetic injections to take away the pain and still have feeling and little to no numbness in the area of the problem.

Spot on Assassin bud also, I personally don't believe for one second that the Club Doctor ect, would allow any player to take so many pain killers knowing the fact the serious long term effect they can have

Took your football pretty seriously though ?!

Yes we took it very seriously. At one point in a season we played 22 games in 21 days due to a major backlog of fixtures due to cup runs. To be honest if it wasnt for the jabs we wouldnt have survived

The playing squad we had played both saturday and sunday leagues, plus all the cups. The last two games were played the same day, the latter of the two went to extra time But we won everything that season

Similar accusations are aplenty in US sports, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was true. After all, players want to play, teams want their best players playing. We've all seen players rushed back from injury, only to break down again. The pressure must be immense.

I know the anti inflammatory Pills my brother in law takes are prescription grade (cos he sends some to the wife) so the club doctors have to be party to it all, it is not just down to the player. Not sure who instigates it all though but it seems endemic!
