Liverpool's Daniel Agger fears extended period on sidelines
• Defender suffered calf injury in FA Cup win over Oldham
• Agger undergoes scan after reclaiming Liverpool place
Daniel Agger is expected to discover on Wednesday whether he faces an extended period on the sidelines with a calf injury suffered against Oldham Athletic.
Liverpool ended Sunday's FA Cup third-round win with 10 men after their vice-captain had to be helped off moments after the manager Brendan Rodgers made his third substitution. Agger appeared in severe discomfort as he left the pitch and underwent a scan on his calf on Tuesday amid concerns over the extent of the problem.
The defender has only recently reclaimed his first-team place from Mamadou Sakho, who has a hamstring problem, and a lengthy absence would be a severe blow to the 29-year-old in what has proved a difficult season.
Rodgers has until 6pm on Wednesday to respond to an FA charge for his comments regarding the referee Lee Mason's appointment for Liverpool's Boxing Day defeat at Manchester City.
Read somewhere that the amount of injuries this Christmas was more than normal due to the heavy ground because of all the rain compounded by the amount of games. Makes sense i suppose.....
Poor bloke must be really ****ed off
These top grounds have incredible drainage. I'd put more stock in the fact that teams played 5 games in 14 days. Where as people on the continent have those 14 days off.
Liverpool's Agger could be out of action for months rather than weeks with calf injury
Daniel Agger could face a lay-off that runs into months rather than weeks after he damaged his calf in the FA Cup win against Oldham
The Liverpool defender hobbled off in the closing stages of his side's 2-0 win in the third round and looked in considerable discomfort as he was helped from the pitch.
It was initially suggested that Agger had suffered severe cramp but he underwent scans earlier this week and it is now feared the problem is more serious.
Liverpool, who have described the injury as 'a strain' said in a statement on their website: 'Agger will now undergo further assessment by the club's medical staff to determine the extent of the problem.
If Agger has pulled or torn his muscle, he could be missing for more than six weeks, which would come as a huge blow to manager Brendan Rodgers, who yesterday accepted an FA charge for comments he made following Liverpool's 2-1 defeat at Manchester City on Boxing Day.
Agger was made Liverpool's vice-captain last summer and he scored a crucial goal against Hull on New Year's Day to keep Liverpool on course to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Central defence is, however, an area where Rodgers has options and aside from Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure, he could have Mamadou Sakho back in contention for the crucial trip to Stoke on Sunday.
The France international pulled his hamstring against Chelsea on December 29 but he has made a quicker than expected recovery and has been working with Liverpool's medical staff in recent days.
Joe Allen remains out with an adductor problem but Daniel Sturridge is expected to return to action at The Britannia Stadium following a nine game lay-off with ankle ligament damage.
Rodgers, meanwhile, is set to face a fine after he submitted a letter to The FA and decided not to contest their charge of questioning a match official's integrity.
He criticised the performance of referee Lee Mason, who is from Bolton, and his assistants as being "horrendous" and said "hopefully we won't have a Greater Manchester referee with Liverpool-Manchester City games in future."
Liverpool's manager, who has never been called before The FA until now, defended his comments a day later, saying he did not intend to question Mason's integrity but he was found by The FA of being in breach of rule E3.
That carries a financial penalty and a warning about future conduct rather than the imposition of a touchline ban. Rodgers is not required to attend a personal hearing.
Stoke boss Mark Hughes was fined £8000 after he admitted a charge of improper conduct after a game at Newcastle last month.
