Fernando Torres is set to be rested from Liverpool’s Europa League clash with Steaua Bucharest after Roy Hodgson revealed he would not be travelling with the squad.

The Reds boss also made it known Scottish youngster Danny Wilson will replace the injured Jamie Carragher for the trip to Romania.

Torres is being rested with the Anfield club’s match against Aston Villa in mind while Wilson gets his opportunity after Carragher was ruled out for three months following surgery on his shoulder.

Wilson will make his second appearance since joining from Rangers and he will partner Sotirios Kyrgiakos at the back - and the pair are likely to be joined in defence by Fabio Aurelio and Martin Kelly.

Hodgson told the club's official website: "Martin Kelly and Danny Wilson will start against Steaua Bucharest and it's a great opportunity for them to stake a claim to be in the first team.

"Not being able to take the points we deserved against Tottenham has kept us in a mid-table position so the next games coming up are going to be very important.

"I've got to be careful not to risk too many of the players I want out on the field against Aston Villa.

"Torres won't travel. I can leave maybe as many as six or seven players who I expect to start against Aston Villa out of the team.

"It means on paper I'm taking a weakened team, but I believe people like Joe Cole, Ryan Babel, Milan Jovanovic, Danny Wilson, Christian Poulsen and Jonjo Shelvey are more than capable of doing a good job for Liverpool Football Club."

something like that.....play for a draw, maybe try and nick it on the break...1pt pretty much puts us through i think - certainly with FC Twente still to go to anfield, i'm not too concerned about this match - would like to see a few youngsters given a good run out (kelly/wilson/shelvey/pacheco) but alongside the better players - also maybe get cole and aurelio on for match fitness. -

Priority no.1 though - get through this with no more major injuries, Priority no.2 - try not to lose

come on - even you can do the above using your 72 years in management
I'd replace Glen with Kelly, Maxi with Pacheco and Torres with Ngog.

No need to risk any injuries to our key players.

well ok - hodgson thinking along the right lines - lets see if he can get them organised, motivated, and more importantly it's a chance for some of those to prove, one last chance, that they have something to offer the club - a competitive game, but pressure slighty off, lets see what you can do.

it'd be a risk - but i'd have serious questions marks over both the players and the management if they didn't perform this time round - its a great opportunity for a second chance this for some of them - it doesn't mean i expect them to go out and smash steaua up 4-0 - but would want to see positives from them.

edit - oh other than the likes of kelly/wilson/shelvey/pacheco - who should be getting the chances/encouragement in these games.....not blamed if it doesn't work (note to roy hodgson)

              I agree with you.

I'd actually even start Pacheco as he definitely could use some playing time but with Roy's ****ty tactics and players probably not being used in their natural positions yet again I wonder who else will end up in a dog pound if we lose and we could easily.

I'd prefer to see Jova and Babel swap places for this one.

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is believed to be in line to hand young defender Danny Wilson a look in, as a replacement for the crocked Jamie Carragher during the upcoming game against Steaua Bucharest.

The two sides meet in a Europa League tie with the Reds requiring a victory to qualify into the knockout round of the tournament with a game to spare in the group stage.

But to accomplish this, the Merseysiders will be without the services of influential defender Jamie Carragher, who is sidelined for three months owing to a dislocated shoulder.

In the meantime, The Independent claims that Hodgson will hand Wilson a start against the Romanian side owing to the injury sustained by the former England international.

Wilson joined Liverpool on a three-year deal during the summer, after an initial fee believed to be in the region of £2 million had been agreed with Rangers.

I'm glad we snapped up the lad for the 2mil at the time instead of waiting till this summer where we would have got him for free. Obviously we didn't know we'd loose Agger and Carra for so much of the season but it's a good opportunity to blood young talent.

hmmmm to be honest, i would go out there to win well and then we can be safely through and concentrate on the league for a few months.....

i would probably agree with leaving torres out to be honest because he still doesn't look 100% (i wonder will he ever be?!)

i would like to have seen a team of:
