True. Ajax fans would love that.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostHe wouldn't be wearing the gear if he hadn't signed, surely. What if he failed the medical or something and the deal got scrapped? He'd look a right twit. So would we.

That first part is questionable, but that last paragraph makes it sound to me like he won't be cup tied. His former club has not played in the Europa League at in point this season. They've only played in the CL.18.18 One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded:
in the same competition for another club; or
for another club that is currently in the same competition.
Furthermore, if the player’s new club is playing in the UEFA Europa League,
his former club must not have played in the UEFA Europa League at any
point in the current season.

Isn't it similar to when we got Maxi last year?
He personally hadn't playing in the Europa, and neither had his club. However as Atletico had dropped into the Europa, and he'd playing in the Champions League for them, it counted as if he'd played in Europe for a club that was in the same competition as us. Hence he was cup tied.
Or something like that anyway....

Kenny's first signing should rightfully get the number 7 shirt and will hopefully do it justice.Originally posted by Alex View PostIs he going to get given the Number 9 shirt? If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

This is the key bit. "... at any point in the current season." Ajax are now in the Europa League. So even though Suarez himself hasn't directly competed in the Europa League, the fact that Ajax will now contest the second round makes him ineligible. The only way that he can be eligible now is if Ajax retire from or are disqualified from the competition before they play in last 32, which let's face it, that's not going to happen.Originally posted by Mello View PostThat first part is questionable, but that last paragraph makes it sound to me like he won't be cup tied. Surely they haven't registered their players yet though, so technically he might never have played for Ajax even if he had of stayed?Originally posted by IJM View PostThis is the key bit. Think of it this way. Suarez played for Ajax in the CL and therefore made a contribution to the fact that they finished 3rd in their group and are now in the EL. If Ajax were still in the CL or out of Europe altogether, then we'd be able to register and field him.Originally posted by RedReet View PostSurely they haven't registered their players yet though, so technically he might never have played for Ajax even if he had've stayed?
I'd love to be proved wrong and see Suarez play for us in the EL to help us win the Europa League Trophy. But reading the wording of the regulations, I'm certain he is not eligible.

I haven't read the rules but I'd be very surprised if that's the case as it defies the logic of the few rules I know. If Suarez isn't eligible then I'd be surprised if it's because he 'contributed' to Ajax finishing 3rd, although I could very well be wrong and am too lazy to check.Originally posted by IJM View PostThink of it this way.
