Well, the Wikipedia article isn't complete. They missed out on that it was sung in churches well before they performed it in the musical Carousel IIRC.

It's just someone trying to be more clever than they are.

There are not more Liverpool representatives because they have history or had success. That would be ridiculous.
So ridiculous that it's the most glaring, stare you in the face, rational explanation you think of. Pundits are of a certain age, successful players with the highest levels of experience at that age are ex Liverpool players for obvious reasons.

So is that ridiculous? or is this ridiculous:

(Evolutionary biologists describe the meme theory where beliefs are transmitted by individuals or a group. This may be how religions survive and so the analogy holds in this case). It is essential for the Liverpool story to be told over and over again and therefore it needs storytellers. This subconsciously propels ex-players from Liverpool to become spokesmen and storytellers and thus perpetuate the myth.

This reminds me of an interview i read a few years back about an ultras group from here, and their leader or better said PR man, said that the closest thing, when their wanted to officially register their activity, so they'd be able to have everything legit, was to register themselves as a religious community. They had everything necessary - sacral objects, saints, religious songs, weekley sermons,..

I skimmed bits of the original article. I've got nothing pressing to do today but it's still more important than reading badly written, pseudo-intellectual, faux profond tosh about football.

                It's risible.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Too many people have far too much time on their hands to over analyse what ultimately is a game of 22 men running about a field kicking a ball. I won't let myself be drawn into this bull****. I only skimmed through the article in question and it raises too many questions and contains so much hypocrisy that it would require I spend a significant amount of my own time to answer what is, in my opinion, an article on a topic which really should not require much of my attention.

I like my football. I enjoy the tribalism and I like to leave my brain behind when discussing it because thats all it really demands.

As the great man said 'Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass. It is terribly simple.'

What a shock that a Chelsea doesnt understand how our support can border on fanatacism / worship / religion

Whilst their support might see going to the match as a "pastime" there are other clubs and supporters who see it as far more serious than that

Its was written by Rodgers & Hammerstein who wrote Carousel so I doubt it was sung in churches prior to that
