Almost every attack start with a central defender making the first pass. If you have central defenders that isn't good enough with the ball then you will almost always be up against an organized defence. Almost no quick counter attacks.

That is why having central defenders with very good ball control is a key point.

If you don't have central defenders with very good ball control then you simply won't be able to play a very good pass and move game. The option must always be there to pass the ball back to them and they in return must be able to pass the ball using one or two touch football. Not like Carra and Kyrgiakos, using five+ touch football.

We dont play counter attacking football under Kenny

He isnt Rafa or Houllier

We play a possession based game in a very short area (I the play is very condensed)

You dont need ALL your central defenders to be comfortable on the ball but you do need one capable of stepping out if need be

Last nights problem to me wasnt the centrebacks there were two problems

Up top the ball was never held up so we couldnt get people in and around the forward player to create any angles

Secondly there was a lack of movement, particularly when Cole came on

I think that we now know why Chelsea didn't offer him a new deal. He is past it most probably because of injuries. He will most probably never get close to be as good as he was a couple of years ago.

If Shelvey had been fit then he would probably been picked before Cole. I would say that it is Shelvey as first choice back up in that position with Cole second.
