But Barnes was simply a phenomena. If we had him at his peak now, we'd probably win the title.
    I think you mean phenomenon.

I thought Barnes was excellent for us and admire the way he settled in and seemed to bear no grudges after the way our fans routinely threw bananas at him when taking corners for Watford. What short memories some of our fans have.

But, personally, I preferred Peter Thompson. Now there was a fantastic winger who really could dribble. He was worth the entrance money on his own

I think Giggs comes pretty close to him as well, especially with his longevity and flexibility in the latter part of his career.
He's not the 4th best Liverpool player. He's some fan's idea of the 4th best he's seen in his lifetime. You have to bear in mind that a lot of people on here haven't been watching Liverpool for very long, which is why you rarely see players from the 60s (or 50s for that matter) in anyone's lists. It's like those lists where the appalling "Titanic" gets voted the best film of all time.

To be fair, I'd have Barnes over Giggs every day of the week. I admire Giggs as a very under-rated player in Man U's success (infinitely more talented than the likes of Beckham) but, as someone pointed out, he's played a lot of games when flair players have got a lot more protection than Barnes did. Plus he's been very injury-prone in recent seasons so misses a lot of games now. It was a huge joke that he got Footballer of the Year, the votes apparently having been made when only 7 or 8 games had been played and he went on to miss lots more games that season

I once watched Barnes play standing on the North Bank. Every single Arsenal fan around me shat themselves whenever he came anywhere near the ball. For all Giggs's undoubted talent, I don't think he's ever had that impact on opposing fans.
        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

You forgot to add that it was a true story Neil.

I thought it might undermine the seriousness of my point.

There's an extended interview with Barnes this Sunday night on talksport, should be good.

if john barnes was currently at his peak.

he would have peaked very late

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
