What im getting at, is that you seem to either think a player is ****, or great. There is no 'He's Alright' setting. Well it seems not anyway. Can you not be happy for a player to be of Squad standard? I know you don't think jay is even that standard. But you seem to think it for most. I could be wrong. Just don't think every player can be compared to Gerrard and the like.Originally posted by Mattshark View PostThere is, I use it with our team because we a have a disappointing lack of quality, and I am not going to pretend I rate a player when I think he is a long way of the standard we need.*Except Michael, who died.

Yes I realise this, Red G made plenty of posts along similar lines, in fact quite a few people did. I but that up because some not very intelligent poster called me a liar and I did say it was a few years ago but and that is typical of the hyperbolic approach people seem take when it comes to Spearing. He has had some decent games, but overall if this is the standard we are happy with, I don't think we'll progress to where we want too.Originally posted by Lee View PostThe Rev.
This is from two-and-a-half years ago!
Have you seen his posts? This guy thinks that Babel is world class.

I do think some players are just all right. I think so of first team players would be ok squad players, the problem is they are starters.Originally posted by Alex View PostWhat im getting at, is that you seem to either think a player is ****, or great. I don't think anyone here is calling him world class or saying that he should be starting every week.Originally posted by Mattshark View PostYes I realise this, Red G made plenty of posts along similar lines, in fact quite a few people did. Every club has squad players - every club in the world. And unless you're City or PSG when you can have a squad of 20 superstars but keep them all happy by paying mega money, then every club will have a Spearing. He hasn't really ****ed up, I'll admit he doesn't do loads but he's done a decent job for a fifth or sixth choice CM.
I honestly don't know what you expect from us? Do you think it's realistic for us to have a squad consisting of the likes of Gerrard, Lucas, Mascherano, Alonso, Iniesta, Xavi etc? Because it doesn't happen.

Jay isnt a starter though is he? I mean, he started one game or so before Lucas got injured. In an ideal world. He is there to come on and sure things up in the latter stages of a game. Nothing more. But I guess its not an ideal world.Originally posted by Mattshark View PostI do think some players are just all right. There are some crazy posts about him, even just in the Fulham game and they have been people calling for him to start every previously (not just Rev, other posters were calling for him to start over Lucas).Originally posted by Lee View PostI don't think anyone here is calling him world class or saying that he should be starting every week.

Nope that is not what I was expecting from squad players. The problem is that he is direct replacement for Lucas atm and for that we need much better and I think we can do better even as a back up. And to be fair, Lucas was a squad player when we bought him.

I think if you looked hard enough certian poster would have said the same about Poulsen when compared to Lucas and he isn't Scouse. ****, they'd probably have said the same about a brush when compared to Lucas at the time.Originally posted by Mattshark View PostYes I realise this, Red G made plenty of posts along similar lines, in fact quite a few people did. I need to see these posts because I honestly don't believe that people would say that. And I'd remember it too.Originally posted by Mattshark View PostThere are some crazy posts about him, even just in the Fulham game and they have been people calling for him to start every previously (not just Rev, other posters were calling for him to start over Lucas).
We're not RAWK ffs.
Anyway, I'm bored now so I'm leaving this thread.

Maybe at times, but sadly the quality of team is suggested by our league position and it is worse than what I expected at the start of the season.Originally posted by Alex View PostDo you not think you are being like that, just in the other direction?
No he isn't that was more a general comment. I do think we need to replace him with a better quality back up for defensive mid though.Jay isnt a starter though is he? Well if you can't be arsed looking that is your problem, I even put up a few things that'd been posted.Originally posted by Lee View PostI need to see these posts because I honestly don't believe that people would say that. And I'd remember it too.

No doubt, but getting the first team in order would be the initial priority no? So players like Jay are going to have to do until we start competing at the top again.Originally posted by Mattshark View PostMaybe at times, but sadly the quality of team is suggested by our league position and it is worse than what I expected at the start of the season.

I didn't think so, I thought this was a great opportunity to push for CL and we blew it.Originally posted by Alex View PostNo doubt, but getting the first team in order would be the initial priority no? So players like Jay are going to have to do until we start competing at the top again.

I'll happily admit I want Jay to succeed. Would I want him to improve more than a played we purchased? Yes, for sure.
He came through our youth system and has the club close to his heart. If he ever became world class and had the best in Europe chasing after him, he'd likely do a Stevie G and stay put, whatever our circumstances. That's one reason.
Anotherid that he is sn example to others in the youth team/reserves. If one player makes it, so can another.
So for the above reasons it would be great if he could prove his ability and worth to the team.
I would not, however, keep him in the squad if he wasn't good enough to be there. For now, he deserves to be in our starting XI ahead of Charlie Adam, as he brings better balance.
I hope we play him until the end of the season. If we win games with him in the side, like we did at the back end of last season, then maybe he can prove he warrants a stay of execution.
No doubt Lucas is number 1 when it comes to DM. but can Jay be his long term deputy? To me, the jury is still out. He needs to perform to a 7/10 level week in, week out. Hasn't done that yet.
For me he deserves his place on merit for now. So over to you Jay.Forwards.......

I will happily admit I want all of our players to succed including Jay - and why wouldn't I?
I think he has done a decent job of being backup for Lucas this season, and we shouldn't underestimate the value of having players in the squad that are happy just being here even if they only get 10 games in a season.
He is not good enough to be a regular starter right now, and wouldn't be if not Lucas was injured, but he has proven himself usefull.
