It's all or nothing on here isn't it, everyone talking about Fulham away last season yet a truer reflection on Jay's abilities was Fulham away this season, not the red card which was a sending off but the fact that leading up to his sending off Fulham cut through us down the middle time and time again.

Lucas is light years ahead of him, passing it 5-10 yards, closing down, putting his foot in are the better parts of Jay's game.
    Positioning isn't.

As I've said before, if playing Jay means we get the best out of Stevie then pick him every week for the rest of this season as we don't have anyone better but don't start believing that he is the type of player to get us into the top 4 over a whole season.

I asked this question earlier and no-one answered.
Would Jay get the team for Man U, Man C, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Newcastle? now ask if he would get in their squads as first option should the regular defensive midfielder for those teams be available.

For me the answer is no and no.

Along with a striker and right winger the defensive/centre midfield is another vital area for us to strengthen in the summer
Hes a young solid squad player who could develop into something more, he mostly puts in a solid shift and is showing all the signs of becoming a better player with experience

Rory Smith on twitter has nailed it on Jay.
His record (apparently) is played 11 won 2. Then the question from Rory - is what Jay's not doing more important than what he is.

Exactly right, his role in the team is to break up play, protect the back 4 and the space in front of them and he just isn't doing it well enough.

I don't understand why so many people make him man of the match, he does very little and he is a poor holding midfielder.

He offers precious little protection. He's light years away from Lucas.

Me neither. I was late to the Stoke MOTM thread and I couldn't believe that some posters had him as MOTM.

Harsh, very harsh. In the same 11 games Jay has played we can use the same criteria for say Reina or Skrtel. He's nowhere as good as Lucas in breaking down play but he's good enough. Where he excels is passing from a defensive mid position and keeping ball well. What seems to affect Jay is having to play next to Adam and Henderson, both who were absolute sh*t bollocks against QPR.

With Adam and Henderson next to Lucas we'd have still lost against QPR.

                          Hmmm not convinced of that

We've won 3 and his sub appearance was against Spurs when the game was well over.

Doesn't make much difference except it shows what Smith is trying to do, but we've a lot bigger problems than Spearing IMO.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Jay Spearing is without a doubt in my mind, the worst player in our squad getting games, and he's only "rated" due to perception. The things he supposedly does; tackle, close people down and break up play, he actually does very very poorly.

Yes, he's worse than Henderson, who has some patches of confidence where he looks a player. Spearing is just ****, a championship level player at best.

Spearing is better on the ball than off it

Which considering we are using him as our holding player is a worry

None of our fit midfielders are suited to that holding role imo
