Newcastle United’s Peter Lovenkrands wary of ‘handful’ Andy Carroll of Liverpool FC

NEWCASTLE striker Peter Lovenkrands says his side will be wary of Andy Carroll when they travel to Anfield this weekend.

Carroll, providing he recovers in time from a knee problem, is in line to make his first appearance against the Magpies since his £35m switch to Merseyside in January.

Lovenkrands partnered the 22-year-old in attack at St James' Park throughout Newcastle's successful promotion campaign last season, and witnessed first hand the havoc Carroll can cause to Premier League defences as he plundered 11 goals for the Tynesiders before his move to Anfield.

And the Danish forward says his team-mates are well aware of the threat posed by the Gateshead-born striker, who opened his Reds account with two goals against Manchester City earlier this month.

“Andy will be a handful to go up against if he plays – we knew that when he was in our team,” said Lovenkrands.

“He was a fantastic asset for us – he’s so strong. He’s shown that again at Liverpool and with England. He’s a great player, and I really wish him the best, but I just hope he doesn’t score against us!

“It’ll be good to see him again.”

Lovenkrands admits Newcastle will travel to Anfield as underdogs on Sunday, with Kenny Dalglish's men among the Premier League's form sides, but says Alan Pardew's men will head into the game full of confidence.

“It’s going to be like the Manchester United game – nobody’s going to expect us to get a result at Liverpool,” he added.

“Hopefully, we can go there and surprise a few people by getting a point or two.

“They have a lot to play for, so they’re going to be up for it, but as a team we don’t want to slack off. We’re up for any game.”

Liverpool's Andy Carroll is warned to expect abuse from Newcastle fans

Kenny Dalglish says Andy Carroll can expect a hostile reception from Newcastle United supporters at Anfield but has told Liverpool's £35m record signing to treat any abuse as a compliment.

Carroll will face his boyhood club on Sunday for the first time since his January move from St James' Park, providing he overcomes the knee injury that kept him out of the 5-0 defeat of Birmingham City, with the manner of his deadline-day transfer still a contentious subject on Tyneside. At the time, the Liverpool striker claimed he had been forced out of Newcastle once the club decided to accept a record sum for a British player. He even travelled down to Merseyside in time for a medical in the Newcastle owner Mike Ashley's helicopter.

Alan Pardew, the Newcastle manager, denied Carroll's version of events and Dalglish believes it will show the esteem in which the 22-year-old was held at St James' should fans turn against their former favourite.

"They will do whatever they want, but it won't take away from what he has done for their football club and it won't take away what the football club meant to Andy," said the Liverpool and former Newcastle manager. "It is a compliment really, in a strange way, if you do get abuse because it means you must have been important to them.

"I'm sure when Newcastle signed Alan Shearer they didn't give too much consideration to Blackburn Rovers fans but that's football. What goes around comes around. I don't know what they will do on Sunday but if, as a player, you don't get abuse off your old supporters then they can't have been too disappointed that you left. I think the boy is expecting something."

Carroll arrived on Merseyside with a thigh injury, which delayed his Liverpool debut for five weeks, and a controversial reputation following several high-profile incidents off the pitch. But Dalglish says the striker's character is the only surprising discovery that Liverpool had made in their £35m investment.

"I don't think we have found out anything new about his game," said Dalglish. "Even if you go back to his first goal against Manchester City, he rattled in one like that against us earlier in the season. We knew what we were getting before Andy came in. What you don't know to the same extent is the personality and if there is one thing that has pleasantly surprised us it is the boy's personality. He is a real down-to -earth boy who sometimes doesn't realise he is a footballer but that is because he is naive and has his feet firmly fixed on the ground. That is not a criticism. That is a huge compliment to him."

Dalglish described Carroll's availability for Sunday as a "wait and see" process, although the England international, who damaged a knee at Arsenal almost a fortnight ago, was free to join several team-mates and Everton's Tim Cahill at the Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Barcelona on a day off on Wednesday.

He'll get a hostile reception from his old fans I'm sure. They probably feel as aggrieved about him leaving as we did when Torres left us. No big deal and it's part and parcel of being a player.

It'll be interesting to see if he celebrates if he does play and score. If the crowd really pay out on him then he has every right to celebrate in front of them, but I doubt he will.

Magpies star: I'm grateful to LFC

Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan believes Liverpool played a major factor in his emergence as a Barclays Premier League star.

The boyhood red will line up for the Magpies in Sunday's clash at Anfield and he admits a return to the club where it all began is always a special occasion for him.

"I was with Liverpool for about four years, between the age of six and 10, I think," said Nolan. "I went to Bolton, and the rest is history, as they say.

"I knew a lot of people who were there, like (former youth team coach) Steve Heighway, but they've all left now. There's a few more who are still there.

"It's a great club. I enjoyed my time there. They looked after me as a youngster really well, and I thank them for that. They probably set me on my way to going to Bolton with all the technical stuff, and where I am today.

"It's always a proud moment captaining Newcastle United, but it'll be extra special at Anfield.

"I just hope we can do ourselves proud and get a result on the day."

Meanwhile, Toon boss Alan Pardew has revealed his admiration for the way Dalglish has re-established Liverpool as a force following his return to the dugout.

Pardew said: "They've always had great players, but something wasn't quite right.

"The management have put that right - they've instilled the Liverpool way

Should have just said " now that they've removed the weakest link, they're flying again" or " it's hard to soar with the eagles when they're grounded by the turkey"
