Kenny Dalglish has criticised the FA for their appeal over Wayne Rooney's Euro 2012 ban and claimed they have set a dangerous precedent.
While Rooney, England manager Fabio Capello and members of the FA greeted the news that his suspension had been reduced to two games after a hearing at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Liverpool's manager questioned the ethics behind the successful appeal.
He is at loggerheads with the FA over two ongoing issues with Luis Suarez. Dalglish said on Thursday it was 'a bit of a joke' that a date has yet to be set for the personal hearing the Uruguayan must have after allegations he racially abused Manchester United defender Patrice Evra at Anfield in October.
Now Dalglish believes the FA's decision to challenge Rooney's suspension will open the door for English clubs to do likewise, should they have players sent off in similar circumstances.
Dalglish said: 'I don't think it sets a very good standard that they appeal against Wayne's three-match ban. I think it calls into question their own disciplinary system. I think it's understandable because Wayne is a fantastic footballer but it's not as if it was a 50-50 challenge.
'So I don't know how they justify diluting it. If it's a straight red, it's three games. If they can justify diluting Wayne's then everyone else who appeals for a similar sending-off in a Premier League game will expect to have their ban reduced. It's great news for England that their best player is going to be available for the last game but I don't think it sets a very good precedent for everyone else.'
The FA issued a statement in response to Dalglish's comments to explain why they were able to launch an appeal. There is no set punishment in UEFA's statutes for red cards, unlike domestically where violent conduct gets a mandatory three-match ban.
The statement said: 'The FA's system allows clubs to make a claim of wrongful dismissal - to reduce a sanction to zero - or appeal the severity of a sanction, both of these processes are dealt with prior to the player's next fixture. UEFA chooses to operate a different process for European matches.'
It is the issues around Suarez, however, with which Dalglish is most concerned. He has called for the FA, referees and managers to sit down together to find a way forward after being left incensed by some of the treatment Liverpool's No 7 has received.
He took the unusual step yesterday at the club's Melwood training ground of showing a series of clips on a large video screen from Monday night's game at Fulham, which highlighted what Liverpool considered to be inconsistencies in decisions made by referee Kevin Friend.
'All we want is some clarity,' Dalglish said. 'If they just sat down and spoke to people in football they'd get a better understanding of it and maybe we'd get a better understanding of them. Martin Atkinson came (in September) and spoke to us and I thought it was really helpful. You see them as referees. When he came here and spoke to the players, everyone was pleasantly surprised.
'He was speaking normally, we were having a laugh. They are under pressure (in games), the players are under pressure, so it was enlightening to hear him speak. 'But then you go into the game -maybe it's the pressure they are under, I don't know - but it is different from them. We're not here to persecute people who are refereeing games. We are here to help them.
'Somebody more intelligent than me can draw up something which is going to be helpful. But certainly we need to help each other to understand where we are coming from and where we are up to.'
Aside from the racism allegations, Suarez has been charged with improper conduct after he was photographed at Craven Cottage after making an alleged hand gesture. If he is found guilty, he could face a ban.
'Anything that comes our way we will have to deal with,' said Dalglish. 'If the charges are proven on Luis, we will have to wait and see what he says. There is already a precedent that has been set with four other cases, where they haven't even been charged for the same gesture.
'We will put that on the back burner for the moment and concentrate on our game on Saturday (against QPR). Sooner rather than later we will get ready to deal with the other issue that is outstanding. Once that is cleared up, we can start talking about the man as a footballer.'
Liverpool have also been accused by the FA of failing 'to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion' following Jay Spearing's red card at Craven Cottage and Dalglish accepted there is a charge to answer. 'If they have behaved improperly, we'll see,' he said. 'But one thing you can say about our players is that their discipline is good.'Comment

The sad thing is you are 100% right, if Rafa was doing this there would be no support for him from the other managers because of the LMA club.The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.Comment
