So, how many top class players have we been able to sign since the 2009 summer?Originally posted by Redspin View PostWhat a whingeing pile of ****e that article is. Who wrote it - Alex ****ing Ferguson? Never read so much steaming turd before - and after reading lots of this forum that's saying something
The answer is one. Suarez.
ONE, not two or three or four, ONE.
If we want top class players that may not be a problem then it is more or less 100% impossible for us to sign one. We may sign Diego Costa but he is a problem player, that is the reason that we have a chance to sign him and he isn't top class.
We are in the situation now that we must gamble on young talents that sit on the bench at big clubs, our own young talents, players like Aspas, Alberto that may be a very good player.Stop the cyberhate

To be fair, I've got some significant issues with that piece too, not least that it reads like the author thinks we've been in sudden decline over the last few years, when actually we were just as far off under Souness/Evans etc yet very nearly, with the right guidance, came back to win the CL and almost win the league in 2008/9. Personally I kind of think it reeks of entitlement attitude and hardly embodies walking through the storm with our heads held high, but maybe that's just me.I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
Mine angry and defrauded young?

That makes it sounds like it could be a positive.
How about a liability?.
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

So what Arn, that just means we're in the same boat as 98% of other teams. Name any top class talents of the profile you are speaking about that we signed under Souness, Evans and Houllier? Yet we were able to improve with the right man and the right plan and win the CL/almost win the league after. We only signed one or two of those players under Rafa even, the others, ie Alonso, Reina, Agger etc were not established world superstars when they arrived of the like you promote us signing (even though we can't) today. Indeed Torres is arguable, and Masch too given the whole loan to West Ham debacle. Some of them developed that way with us, but very few of them were dead certs when we got them imo.Originally posted by Arn View PostSo, how many top class players have we been able to sign since the 2009 summer?

The main reason to why we won't sell Suarez is IMO that we won't be able to replace him without making big gambles.
We won't be able to replace him with another top class player. Henry clearly knows that and points to that in his statement.
He know better than anyone the situation we are in. Yes we must strenghten the squad and starting XI but to keep our only top class players is much more important than that.
That is why it hurt the club so much that Suarez want to leave. He is our best player. Keep him and we may have a chance to finish in the top four. Sell him and the chance to finish in the top four is more or less 0%.Stop the cyberhate

When we signed up Rodgers he was in the same situation as Rafa when it comes down to the squad. A few over paid players that we must get off the wage bill. A difficult job and because of that loaning them out have been the answer most times.Originally posted by MrMichael View PostSo what Arn, that just means we're in the same boat as 98% of other teams. The main difference is of course that Rodgers have a very good youth system to pick players from to fill up the squad with. Rafa didn't.
Torres was one of the best players in Spain when we signed him. Xabi the same. Sociedad almost won the league and he was the spider in the net in that team.
I have also as you know mentioned a few times how important it is to have a manager with an excellent CV if you can't splash the cash.
Rodgers don't have an excellent CV. That is also a big difference between him and Rafa. That makes it easier for a manager as Rafa to sign top class players than it is for Rodgers.
That may of course change if Rodgers improve his CV but that will take time.
Rodgers have a very difficult job ahead of him. Suarez is a very very important player for him. A player he simply must keep.
Another big difference is of course that we can't offer CL football.
When was the last time we signed up a top class player without being able to offer that? Suarez is the answer. The only one.Last edited by Arn; 09-08-13, 09:46 AM.Stop the cyberhate

I said before that I don't think he was at that time considered a top class player but I have changed my mind.Originally posted by dom9 View PostArn, do you reckon Suarez was a top class player when he signed for us?Stop the cyberhate
