I don't think they want to pay that much. But while he's our player they know have a tough fight. At Arsenal on the other hand, it will be like taking a dummy from a baby. After all Arsenal have a track record of losing their best players without a fight.

Let me talk to Arsenal: Suarez is ready to tell Liverpool he wants to leave for London

By Dominic King and Sami Mokbel

      UPDATED: 09:55, 25 July 2013

Arsenal expect Luis Suarez to tell Liverpool on Thursday that he wants to leave for London.

It would be the latest twist in an increasingly bitter saga that escalated on Wednesday when Liverpool owner John W Henry reacted to Arsenal’s latest bid of £40,000,001 by tweeting: ‘What are they smoking at the Emirates Stadium?’

That offer, which triggered a clause in Suarez’s contract, was rejected and although Arsenal remain in touch with Liverpool, Anfield manager Brendan Rodgers on Wednesday reiterated the club’s determination to retain their Uruguay striker.

‘If Arsenal want the player, then they have to produce the value for the player,’ he said. ‘There was an offer two weeks ago of £35m. Two weeks later it is now £40million and £1 — I don’t think it is anywhere near what he is worth. But it is two-fold, really. A player may want to go but then somebody has to pay the value of that player.’

Suarez made his first appearance in a red shirt since April 21 during Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Melbourne Victory on Wednesday and received a thunderous ovation when he came on in the 72nd minute at the MCG before setting up the second goal for Iago Aspas.

Real Madrid remain in the picture in the pursuit of Suarez and the fact they have sold Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli has left room in their squad for a new striker. Suarez said at the beginning of the summer, when he first voiced his discontent, that the Bernabeu would be his dream move.

Rodgers, however, is unmoved. He has had a number of conversations with Suarez at Liverpool’s base in Melbourne and will have more discussions with the 26-year-old when they arrive in Bangkok on Thursday.

‘For me, it is work as normal,’ said Rodgers. ‘There is no change for me or for him. He just needs to get on with getting himself fit. Until somebody tells me something different, that is what all my concentration will be on. I am not worried about it messing with his head but there will be no games played at Liverpool.

‘Luis is part of the group and he knows the standard you have to meet at this club, on and off the field.’

Suarez’s appearance in Melbourne allayed fears he would not be in the right frame of mind to play following Arsenal’s bid and while his demeanour was not outgoing — he didn’t celebrate when Liverpool scored — it was different away from the cameras.

In the tunnel area, Suarez was happy to pose for photographs and sign autographs, while he took part in group activities at the team hotel during the day.

Rodgers has had no complaints with Suarez’s attitude since the striker returned from Montevideo.

‘It was a long flight,’ Rodgers said. ‘He met up with the others on Sunday and then trained a double session on Monday, did another session on Tuesday and then played some of the game, so he is a wee bit weary.

‘He’s surrounded by speculation but he is here with us and he is working with the group. He’s very much a Liverpool player and in the coming weeks we need to get him up to speed to ensure he’s fit and raring to go for the beginning of the season

‘But he said he was OK to be involved. He said he was OK to go on to the pitch and his concentration was fine. The bid may be a distraction but players are paid enough money now to produce for their clubs and he just has to keep his professionalism, which he has done.’

Rodgers believes Suarez owes a debt of gratitude to the fans who have backed him throughout his time at the club and said: ‘The support he has received from the supporters and people of Liverpool has been unrivalled despite the fact he has missed a lot of games for various reasons.

‘They have stood by him like a son and looked after him. Whatever happens in the coming weeks I am sure that will be something in his mind.’

Former Liverpool manager Graeme Souness echoed that view and claimed Suarez should feel a duty to help his side get back into the top four.

‘He should stay at Liverpool, be a company man and try to get them into the Champions League,’ said the former Scotland midfielder.

‘Real Madrid are arguably the biggest club in the world and I could live with that. But leaving Liverpool for another English team is not going to endear him to any Liverpool fan.’

Unless Liverpool receive an offer that matches their valuation, Suarez cannot talk to any other club as he is a Liverpool employee with three years left on his contract.

The £40m clause means Liverpool only have to tell him they have received an offer.

I last looked at this thread at 10.15pm yesterday since when there's been 163 posts.

Am I right to assume nothing of substance has actually happened in the interim?
          .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

If Suarez does go to Arsenal, it would be interesting to know the kind of clauses he expects to have in his contract.

If he signed for £50 million without a clause you'd assume that Arsenal would want £70 million to sell him to Madrid or Barca next summer.

Surely Suarez though would want to ensure that any price is not too prohibitive for the Spanish clubs and want his release fee as low as possible (and as watertight!) to make him as palatable as possible to those clubs.

I wonder what clause/release fee Arsenal would settle for as this might **** up any potential deal anyway.

what concens me and what seems to have been forgotten is that alot of money was placed on the fact that Suarez would sign for Arsenal.

this implies somone had insider knowledge that A) Suarez had already agreed terms and B) was certain that Arsenal would get their man and would be prepared to pay alot of money.

I cant beleive that having seen Suarez's contract Arsenal would assume that it meant that liverpool had to sell.

I cant believe that having been told about a release clause in the contract Arsenal would not check it out beforehand.

Liverpool need to set a deadline now to any club. ie one week and then move on. If Arsenal come back with 60+ million then so be it.

remember suarez outscored bale and I think had quite a few assists too probably playing fewer games. I dont get why he is only being rated at 55m compared to Bales 80m. Its not as if Bale is a pretty boy...

Daily Mail having a pop at JWH asking what he was smoking when he signed the likes of Carroll, Downing, Adam etc.

Not quite sure how it's comparable. He's entitled to say what he likes about Arsenal's bid. It's his club

Funny how Daily Mail seem to have gone from hating Suarez to wanting to free him from Liverpool

Huge bets apparently originated from Barcelona. Not sure if that's true or not

The clause exists. But one of the sides has misinterpreted it. Rodgers has said that they don't have to accept it, nor even allow talks, just inform him of it. I'm pretty sure they would have checked it out

Arsenal haven't seen Suarez' contract, hence the reason they bid 40m + £1.
                        They were misinformed.

Interestingly now, Liverpool could play this very cool and make Arsenal look pretty foolish.

RM are not going to get involved it seems now.

therefore all liverpool need to do is to publicly continue to support and mollycoddle Suarez, stick a nice hefty price tag on his head say 70m.

Arsenal who pretend to covet him so much will now before forced to either back off like cowards and leave poor old luis dangling, or pay the ridiculous fee.
If they dont pay the fee then Suarez have to settle down and get on with it.
If he messes around, he gets fined thus reducing costs to liverpool.

I only see a win win for Liverpool now.

Do you know how many red cards Sergio Ramis has to his name? I don't think suspensions concern them

Yeah but Suarez gets suspended without red cards. Anyway, I doubt he'd get suspensions in Spain for racist abuse anyway. Probably a paltry fine

Marca are saying Madrid don't want him. Probably just a game. Either way, he has 3 years on his contract. The clause is going to be tested now. If we come out on top in that test then we have the upper hand on this one

I'm glad JWH didn't delete that tweet and he tweeted after it too. Shows that Suarez will not be going for £40,000,001
