I agree with Mr M. It at least indicates Pere Guardiola has been blabbing the terms of Suarez's contract - as they see it - to Arsenal, which is surely tantamount to tapping up?

Of course this happens in football all the time, but with rather precise evidence like this couldn't we make some sort of complaint?

          Or is that just silly?
I think they'd rightly argue that the £40m clause had become public knowledge.

We should be grateful that Arsenal bid 40m + £1 rather than 40m + 1p.

So much so that after offering £40m and it being rejected they offered us £1 more? That's rather overly certain about the exactitude of something that has been the subject of all sorts of rumour and denial.

Hell, we might not win, but we should report them for it anyway

Well yes, but it's such a prevalent practice that it's largely irrelevant.

Every man, his dog and itk have been reporting the value of this clause for months.

Maybe even Arsenal have been taken in by a false rumour. Now that would be funny.

My comment wasn't a dig at Henry, I'm saying making a comment like that and then eventually selling to Arsenal will make him look very foolish.

We're complaining about football losing it's soul, our owners showing some. It's ****ing ace in every possible way.

He's listened to the concerns and shut them down with a funny soundbite that resonates with fans.

Have we also considered the other implication of the offer being made in the first place?

With the Arsenal squad if Suarez really was racist he wouldn't be chasing him. Clearly those in the game know he's not.

Arsene, for all his fault, is an exceptional judge of talent, and hes willing to smash his transfer records to buy a player who will be banned for the first 6 games, who most of his fans hate, and will possibly turn the media against them.

And some think we'd be better of without him?

                            By John Cross

Arsenal's cheeky bid has kicked off the Luis Suarez saga, but only he himself can end it

                            24 Jul 2013 09:03

The bid from the Gunners was cheeky, but it was also a statement of intent to get their man

Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal board have shown they mean business with their sensational and cheeky £40,000,001 bid for Luis Suarez.

Sensational because it would more than TREBLE their transfer record, bring in the Premier League's most controversial character and sign him from a direct rival.

Cheeky because of the extra £1. They've done that for a reason. It goes over the clause in Suarez's contract, is a reflection of their valuation which clearly doesn't go as far as £50m and they've done it with encouragement.

Liverpool say the clause is not a buy-out. It purely obliges them to tell Suarez. The Suarez camp have clearly made noises in the right ears as to what it would take. They also feel going above the clause entitles him to

go. That argument will run and run.

What is clear though is that Suarez wants to go, his camp are pushing it and anyone who thinks differently is incredibly naïve.

If Liverpool dig in, force Suarez to stay, qualify for the Champions League then it will be a victory for football. Brendan Rodgers will be rightly lauded as a warrior against player power.

But Arsenal couldn't keep Robin van Persie when he wanted to leave. He had one year left on his deal, Suarez has three, so it's not the same. But the principle is the same.

If Suarez now kicks up, wants to go, makes life difficult, then Liverpool will struggle to keep him.

Having said it's England and the media he wants to escape, Suarez will be guilty of the ultimate betrayal if he goes to Arsenal.

Last summer, Arsenal were hoping if they had to sell it would be to Juventus. But they didn't back up their interest with a bid. It may be similar with Real Madrid.

Then what to do? Sell to a foreign rival to spare blushes at the expense of £10m? Because I don't think Real Madrid value him at £40m - give or take the extra quid. And they've yet to come in fully.

Also to suggest Arsenal have only made this bid as they know it will fail is laughable and naïve. Clubs don't act unless they have good information.

They've had encouragement. Suarez is ready to come to Arsenal. Arsenal are hopeful, confident and expectant. They believe the right big name can help them win the title.

They are ambitious but not silly. When Real Madrid moved the goalposts on Gonzalo Higuain, they pulled out. They had finance to do it but simply don't value him as highly as Suarez.

Wenger sees Suarez as the complete package - goals, annoys defenders and is a nightmare to play against.

From what I hear, the Arsenal dressing room doesn't have an issue despite the ban for biting Branislav Ivanoic and racist comment to Patrice Evra.

Thomas Vermaelen knows him from Ajax circles. Arsenal players want big players and Suarez is one. The Arsenal hierarchy are ready to do it.

But how will Arsenal fans feel? Will you accept him at your club? I've felt in the past he needed to leave English football. I've been appalled.

Clearly spitting is different to Suarez's crimes. But Patrick Vieira is an Arsenal legend despite spitting at an opponent at West Ham. That's appalling.

It's different when he's on your team. Do I agree? Not really.

The first bid has been turned down. That's par for the course. This story will run and run.

The next move may be Suarez's. If he wants out, good luck in stopping him.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Luis Suarez: Liverpool owner baulks at Arsenal's £40m bid

Liverpool owner John W Henry has asked what "they're smoking" at Arsenal after rejecting the Gunners' improved offer of just over £40m for Luis Suarez.

The unusual bid of £40,000,001 was designed to trigger a clause in the 26-year-old Uruguay striker's contract.
Under the terms of Suarez's deal, Liverpool must inform him of the bid but do not have to accept it.

Henry tweeted: "What do you think they're smoking over there at Emirates?"
It is unclear whether Henry is talking about Arsenal's attempts to sign Suarez or their valuation of the player.
Liverpool have now rejected two bids from Arsenal.
While they remain determined to keep their prized asset, who scored 30 goals for the club in 44 appearances last season, their resolve is likely to be tested if the bidding continues to rise.

Should Arsenal persist and have an improved bid accepted, it could come close to trebling their previous highest initial outlay on a transfer.

The Gunners, whose first offer for Suarez was £30m, paid a reported £15m to Zenit St Petersburg for Andrey Arshavin, in January 2009.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers last week said he considered Suarez to be at least as valuable as Edinson Cavani, who recently joined Paris St-Germain for £55m.
Real Madrid remain interested but have yet to make a formal offer.

Suarez joined Liverpool's pre-season tour of Australia at the weekend and was expected to hold talks about his future with Rodgers.

The Uruguay international flew to Melbourne from Montevideo on Sunday after being given extended leave by the Reds following the Confederations Cup.
He wants to leave Anfield to play for a Champions League club despite only signing a new long-term deal last summer.

Speculation has grown about Suarez's future since he was punished with a 10-game ban at the end of April for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

The striker still has to serve six games of that suspension and was also banned in 2011 after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra.
Suarez joined Liverpool from Ajax in January 2011 in a £22.7m deal.
What do you mean it could've been anyone? Name me one person who's got a grudge against penguins
