Tony Barrett's article on Luis Suarez - '
Selling Luis Suárez will make gap to elite that much greater for Liverpool

Luis Suárez may be desperate not to be part of Liverpool’s future, but his club are in no position to envisage, never mind countenance, life without him.

As unbearable as his continuing presence at Anfield appears to have become to outsiders, those inside the club recognise that his departure, particularly to Arsenal, could spark a new level of unpleasantness, with the gap between Liverpool and the Barclays Premier League elite becoming greater than it already is.

Liverpool are fighting hard to keep Suárez and are unwilling to write him off for one reason — at a time when they are finding it difficult to attract players of the necessary quality to help them to bridge the gap, they can ill afford to lose the one player they have who is most capable of turning an average side into a good one.

For all the hullabaloo that surrounds Arsenal’s offer of £40,000,001 and the hysteria that surrounds Suárez’s contract and its now notorious clause, there is something more basic at play than legal debate and financial argument.
Liverpool do not want and cannot afford to lose a player of world-class ability to the club who occupied the fourth spot in the Premier League last season that they are targeting. They could sell Suárez to Arsenal for £60 million and it would still not make sense.

This is a pivotal battle for Liverpool, the outcome of which will go a long way towards determining whether or not they are able to compete for a place in the top four at any time in the immediate future. Were Suárez to go to the Emirates Stadium it is hard to imagine how Arsenal would not be strengthened and Liverpool not be weakened.

Those who argue that every player has his price are right, but in this case Suárez is the exception that proves the rule. The Uruguay forward is one of a dwindling number of reasons for top-class players to consider joining Liverpool. Lose him and Brendan Rodgers’s war chest may be boosted significantly but who would Liverpool buy, particularly with the summer transfer window into its final month?

This is the reality at Anfield. It is harsh and it is brutal, but it is one that they have no choice other than to confront — and the only way they can do that is by making it clear to Suárez that he will not be allowed to join Arsenal, no matter how hard he tries to force a move.

As usual Arn, that is not the point / issue. The point is that having been unswervingly and speculatively critical of FSG, Ayre and at times Rodgers, when they have been seen to do something right you have been seen to divert credit for that away from them onto someone who has been at the club 5 minutes and whose role in this you are assuming without specific knowledge. That does not come over well, whether that is your intention or not. Various sayings about making beds and lying in them come to mind; you cannot expect people to take your posts in isolation especially when you make so many of them over periods of time banging on about the same interpretations of situations which many other people do not hold.

Seriously though, if one good thing is coming out of all this it seems to me like many more of our fans are starting to see the pretty impressive operator in our Brendan that a few of us have seen from the beginning. Not that I blame anyone for having had doubts, serious ones even, and of course he still has to walk the walk in terms of making us really competitive for top 4, but imo the guy is good, really good, and we're lucky to have him.

Lol..so it looks like Suarez has shot himself in the foot with his contract bollocks and threats.

Also...it now clearly gives us evidence to do arsenal over the £40.0001 m bid

I just wonder why it is bloody difficult for some fans to understand that football is a team game on and off the pitch. You could have a brilliant squad but if the off the pitch staff isn't working like a team then it will affect the results on the pitch.

The off the pitch staff didn't work like a team before, during and after the Evra gate. The result. A mess. It affected the whole club from top to bottom.
