I want to build Liverpool around Luis Suarez, says Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed he hopes to build his side around Luis Suárez over the coming seasons and believes that the future of striker will take care of itself as long as the focus remains on football.

Ian Ayre, Liverpool's managing director, flew to Barcelona this week to open preliminary talks with Pere Guardiola, Suárez's agent, about an improved contract for the Uruguay international, who has two and a half years remaining on his current deal.

Suárez wants to play in the Champions League and with Liverpool in second place in the table they are in a good position to deliver that this season.
Whether merely qualifying for Europe's premier competition is enough to satisfy Suárez remains to be seen, but for the moment Rodgers wants the emphasis to remain on the pitch ahead of a tough festive schedule which includes trips to top-four rivals Manchester City and Chelsea.

"There is nothing to report on that," he said when asked about Suárez's contract.

Luis Suarez could still want out of Liverpool even if he signs new contract, according to John Barnes

The former winger warns fans that the Uruguayan striker may still angle for a move away from Anfield even if he does sign a lucrative new deal

Liverpool legend John Barnes has claimed that Luis Suarez could still try and negotiate a move away from Anfield - even if he signs a lucrative new contract.

The Reds are keen to tie their Uruguayan hit-man down to a long-term deal after watching him soar to the top of the Premier League scoring charts since his return from suspension at the end of September.

Suarez's sensational form has seen him score 17 goals this term, and reports have emerged that the five-time European Cup winners are looking to make the former Ajax forward the highest-paid player in their history.

However, former England winger Barnes, who played for the Reds from 1987-1997, has warned that Suarez, who agitated for a move away in the summer, may still want out even if he does sign a fresh deal.

Barnes told talkSPORT: “He has to want to stay. I want him to stay at Liverpool because he is a fantastic player and he will help Liverpool, but only if he wants to be here.

“He has to be committed to the club. As much as he is playing well now, I don’t think it will be good for the club long-term because every time there is a transfer window it is going to rear its head. If he signs a new contract, he has to just say ‘I’m staying for the next five years’.”

“We cannot have a situation whereby he comes back from the World Cup and there are still rumours he wants to leave.”

The 26-year-old was banished from the Reds' first team by manager Brendan Rodgers in the summer after the striker accused his boss of broken promises over a switch to Real Madrid.

Suarez subsequently returned to the team and has wreaked havoc on opposition defences this term.

His double in Sunday's 5-0 hammering of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday took his tally to 17 goals in just 11 games.

However, Rodgers was coy when asked on the reported new deal in his weekly press conference on Thursday.

"There's nothing to report on that," Rodgers said. "He's just focusing on his football."

A win for the Reds against Cardiff City on Saturday will take them top of the Premier League.

Brendog says nowt other than "there's nothing to report" there. Rest of the article is conjecture.

Give us 3 more years Luis, then you can go for £50m when you're 29.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

No doubt he's now on close to £200k a week yet he'll be worth every penny. No problems with the very best players getting as much as they can from the top boys. Its the Adebayors of the world on similar wages that **** it up for everybody.

That is absolutely brilliant news. I don't believe he'll be here long term but excellent for both parties & well deserved for Suarez.

Why? It's preposterous to think he's not going to give us at least 2 years from now on and I expect us to be in the CL by then, regularly.
