    LIVERPOOL captain Steven Gerrard has picked up a new nickname: Tufty.

    Gerrard, who was formerly known by friends as "Titch", for being the smallest member of his class at West Derby school Cardinal Heenan, has now outgrown the label.

    Friends of the 6ft 2in soccer star have given him the Tufty tag because of the brushed-up fringe that he has started sporting.

    Team-mates reckon it makes him look like the famous children's icon Tufty the road safety squirrel.

    Tufty was a household name in the 1960s and 70s when he was the character in Ministry of Transport films about traffic safety, aimed at children who joined The Tufty Club.

    The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said: "We are delighted Steven has picked up this nickname.

    "It might even persuade some children to find out more about Tufty and road safety."
    He's not 6'2 is he? Thought he was just about 6ft.

            Starting a rumor that Gerrard's nickname is Tufty - now that is just wrong on so many levels.
