Nicky Tanner had 24 hours to decide between joining Torquay or Bath City on loan for the rest of that season with a view to a permanent move before we came in and signed him.
Whoever the scout was came to watch a game (don't know who Bristol Rovers were playing) Tanner was sub, he came on left midfield for the last 15 minutes with Rovers winning did a few stepovers and put a cross in that Rovers scored from.

The scout decided that if he could do that from left midfield he would be a great ball playing centre half.

100% honest to god true story.

Nicky Tanner is an alcoholic prick btw.

That and a story about Gareth Taylor goes to show you how much luck is involved with a lot of players who have a career in football (don't like to actually describe them as footballers)
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

Again, nowhere near the worst 11.

I also wonder if Diomede's overhead kick against Arsenal had gone in, whether things would have been different.
WTF, you're talking about a Champions League winner there

My penneth worth would be Anthony Le Tallec. Never has a player promised so much but delivered so little

Barnesy said exactly the same, could have had an off day when the scout was there and might have never been spotted. 2 lads have come from my home town Harrogate John Scales and Andy O Brien both are decent fellas but there was a lot better players playing in there respective teams as youths.

A lot of it back then was either luck or friends in the right places.....I imagine not that many slip through the net nowadays.

Back in 93 he was a centre back with Bristol Rovers, the day I got offered a pro deal (on £100 per week ) Gareth was told they were releasing him at the end of the season, he had played 1 game (a 6-1 defeat away to Cambridge)
Anyway that night we had a ressie game away to Cheltenham, Gareth did his knee, fast forward 12 months of rehab and he's back able to play again.

1st team squad goes away to the Isle of Wight for a week (all glammer in the lower leagues), Gareth stays behind with the kids to get match fitness before leaving, the club has loads of centre backs so he plays upfront away to Caldicott, scores a hat trick in a 3-0 win.

By the time we returned he was selected in the Welsh U21's as a striker, a year later he moved to Crystal Palace for 750k, then another 750k move to Sheff Utd and he went on to play for Man City, QPR, Notts Forest amongst a few others as well as 15 full Welsh caps.

Now don't get me wrong Gareth was (probably still is) a lovely fella, top man but if he hadn't done his ACL that night he was 99.9% certain to have a career in non league, maybe even dropping out altogether.

Instead he went on to play over 500 games as a target man.

Dont get anyone including Traore, obviously he was awful on the eye at times but you cant have a guy who was outstanding on the way to winning a champions league in your teams worst ever 11!

He had the redeeming feature of making some lovely sliding tackles with those long legs of his.
