The problem with the squad of a few years ago was as soon as someone got injured we had no real replacements for them that were of sufficient quality. The squad we have now has much greater depth.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Not completely true. Benni, Skrtel & Sami were ace subs. Also Fabs was more than good enough when fit but sadly that was nowhere near regular enough. We were very nearly there.

      In the past tho, innit?
      3rd place. Worst champions ever.

We had essentially Benayoun, Babel and Ngog who could come on and offer something in an attacking sense. At the time Ngog was really young and raw, Babel was Babel, which left only Benayoun who could come on and make an impact in the attacking sense, an injury to one of the attacking players and he was in from the start leaving us reliant on players such as El Zhar from the bench

          /futile discussion.

It will be FAR more interesting and relevant to wait until the end of August then compare our squad with that of 12 months ago.
I'd suggest we need to wait longer than that even. There will be substantial surgery to the squad and we will need to see how players work with one another before we know how good the squad is.

This time NEXT August I'd say.

Realistically without Champions League football we'll struggle to get the top players in.

If we finish 4th this season then I think the John Henry, Kenny and Commolli will buy some genuinely top class players next summer.

I think our purchases now are more suited to get us into the top 4, We cant afford to take to many gambles......It seems our purchases are very much dependant on players like Adams, Caroll ( till Injured) and Downing replicating there best seasons as of yet.

I would expect us to get 1/2 genuine top class in January if we are in the mix at the top of the league, witht he hope that those players have a few months to acclimatise before the CL next season.

I wouldn't expect to do business in the January window, it's typically difficult to get the right players and often they prove to be expensive. This being the case I wouldn't expect any big players to come in in January unless we are in trouble.

It was our best side for 20 years. And still there are people who think Rafa did a **** job.

Yeah we were painfully close, should've won the title in 2009, but now's not the time to be looking back.

                    It was a cracking team.

I do wonder what Rafa thinks when we're signing £20m players here and there. It's a shame he never got a chance under good ownership.

Time to look to the future now.

Amazing really, especially when you consider that ????? and ???? were practically unheard of at the time.

It was definitely our best side in 20 years, well probably anyway. In fact yes, in terms of balance

But IMO, the 2nd placed 2009 season is a bit of a misnomer. We only came second because we absolutely had to go for it, all guns blazing, in the last 3 or 4 months of the season. Had we played like that all along we'd have walked it, I had no idea we were capable of playing like that and similarly, why we didn't do it more often

That clutch of games, Madrid, Arsenal etc we were absolutely unreal, why couldn't we play like that all the time!
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"

remember thinking that season in about jan/feb that we had probably thrown it away with too many points dropped at home. thrilling down the stretch though. epic side.
