It's because we attack in numbers and too often when we get turned over the opposition counter quickly and we seem to be out numbered at times.
In fact, out numbered is probably the wrong term for it. I think it just seems that way when the opposition are sprinting at our back 4 with little cover from the midfield in central areas.
If we actually had players up top who convert the number of chances we create then I wouldn't be so bothered. If you adopt a cavalier approach to the attack then you have to accept you will be weak at times on the defence. Winning 4-1 every week would delight me, I wouldn't be worrying about the one goal conceded.
But we do not have players who can finish off chances on a regular basis. For all his wonderful play and despite his 49 goals in a season for Ajax, Luis Suarez for me is too wasteful in front of goal. His game is obviously more about goals, but if he could be more clinical he'd step up another level........ As for Andy Carroll, well he's not scored a goal in the league yet, so that tells its own story.
I remember under Houllier we used to sometimes only create one or two chances a game and more often than not we had a Michael Owen or a Robbie Fowler to tuck away the chance. I could only imagine the sort of damage a player like that would do partnering Suarez......
Anyhow, since we don't have those types of players, maybe we need to step back slightly from the cavalier approach and become a more solid and robust unit. As someone mentioned earlier, I would consider going to a 4231, or a 4141. We have Gerrard coming back who is the ideal player to slot in, and we also have Henderson who can come in centrally, as well as Spearing who did a fine job at the back end of last season.
It's either that or stick with the 442 variation we are playing atm and take out Adam for a more mobile midfielder who has the legs to get back and help out Lucas and the back 4. Because for me, the team we deployed yesterday would seriously struggle to contain the better teams in the league.
