It's because we attack in numbers and too often when we get turned over the opposition counter quickly and we seem to be out numbered at times.

In fact, out numbered is probably the wrong term for it. I think it just seems that way when the opposition are sprinting at our back 4 with little cover from the midfield in central areas.

If we actually had players up top who convert the number of chances we create then I wouldn't be so bothered. If you adopt a cavalier approach to the attack then you have to accept you will be weak at times on the defence. Winning 4-1 every week would delight me, I wouldn't be worrying about the one goal conceded.

But we do not have players who can finish off chances on a regular basis. For all his wonderful play and despite his 49 goals in a season for Ajax, Luis Suarez for me is too wasteful in front of goal. His game is obviously more about goals, but if he could be more clinical he'd step up another level........ As for Andy Carroll, well he's not scored a goal in the league yet, so that tells its own story.

I remember under Houllier we used to sometimes only create one or two chances a game and more often than not we had a Michael Owen or a Robbie Fowler to tuck away the chance. I could only imagine the sort of damage a player like that would do partnering Suarez......

Anyhow, since we don't have those types of players, maybe we need to step back slightly from the cavalier approach and become a more solid and robust unit. As someone mentioned earlier, I would consider going to a 4231, or a 4141. We have Gerrard coming back who is the ideal player to slot in, and we also have Henderson who can come in centrally, as well as Spearing who did a fine job at the back end of last season.

It's either that or stick with the 442 variation we are playing atm and take out Adam for a more mobile midfielder who has the legs to get back and help out Lucas and the back 4. Because for me, the team we deployed yesterday would seriously struggle to contain the better teams in the league.
    Forwards.......

When Agger is there we look a bit shaky on the right side. When he's not we look shaky on the right and indecisive on the left. Kelly'll get better and Enrique looks a quality signing but we seem to be positionally at sea and susceptible to an attack with a bit of pace in it. Priority must be another centre half in Jan.
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

excellent first half from us yesterday, second half not so much but we got the 3 points and that's all that matters.

The team and squad to me seems to be bedding in now, the left side is sewn up pretty well with Enrique & Downing as is the right with Henderson or Kuyt and Kelly or Johnson the area I suppose did concern me yesterday was the centre backs, neither fill me with confidence at all and I'll be honest being there yesterday I was always fearful of a Carra or Skrtel error.

Anyway decent performance all in all, O'Hara played well for Wolves and got about us pretty well in the second half and we certainly had chances to kill off the game which on another day we'd have taken.

This side I think will get better and better over the coming months, we've got good depth now in the squad.

        Looking forward to the bitters!

fans have questioned his performances. Yes today was better but he's got to put in that sort of shift every game. No one said he had to score 30 goals but he's got to put in 100% effort.
i think some people were all too ready to see him fail from the minute he signed just because he wasn't a sergio aguero, i never said fans couldnt question players performances, but some went too far and already labelled him "****e" or as a player without desire or the ability to work hard. they will be the same people in the future who as soon as he doesn't play well will start whinging "why didnt we use the 35 mil on mata or aguero."

overall, i saw the game like this- we were always a little shaky in defense especially when aerial balls were put into the box and especially in the second half, BUT the attack was encouraging as we created so many scoring chances, we were unlucky not to put them away because like kenny said if we had have the stadium would have been near empty of wolves fans 5 minutes from full time. he was smart to bring on kuyt as jarvis was causing problems.

Another thing that i think alot of people underestimate is how the new signings are still in the process of working out how to play with each other. i saw henderson make several good runs that were not spotted and andy carroll was caught off his balance because he did not expect suarez to pass to him when he did. the point being that the more they play together the more they will learn to anticipate each others runs off the ball, i think this reason contributed to us failing to convert more of our goalscoring opportunities, it will only become better with time.

We could potentially use Mostar's pics as a 'flick book' and just replay the game.
