Enrique: It's only a matter of time

Jose Enrique has warned Everton that it is only a matter of time before Andy Carroll starts plundering goals in the league.

The 22-year-old earned words of praise from his manager for his application in the 2-1 victory over Mick McCarthy's Wolves on Saturday.

All that was missing was a goal, said Kenny Dalglish - though Carroll headed against the post and saw a good chance in injury-time slip away.

Enrique predicts his former Newcastle teammate will soon start finding the net on a regular basis in the league following his Carling Cup cracker against Exeter.

And he is hopeful Everton will be the first victims next weekend.

"Andy was unlucky not to score," said Enrique. "Maybe he tried too many tricks with the chance at the end but I think next time he will score.

"Against Everton would be the perfect game for him to score."

Carroll partnered Luis Suarez in attack and the pair combined to undo the Wolves rearguard on several occasions.

"I think he and Luis Suarez complement each other well," said Enrique, whose superb pass created our second goal for Suarez.

"Every day I see how good Luis is. Everyone knows if he's in form he's one of the best strikers in the world.

"Of course he's still young and still has a lot to learn but if he continues the same way he will be one of the best for a long time."

Collecting three points against Wolves puts Liverpool back on track in the league heading into successive derbies.

First up are neighbours Everton before north-west rivals Manchester United visit Anfield after the international break.

Enrique added: "The derby is a massive game but the most important thing is the three points.

"If we want to get one of those Champions League positions then we need to win these type of games.

"If we can get another three points before the international break we will have done well.

"We should have scored more goals against Wolves but the main thing is we made a lot of chances."

Kenny Dalglish says Luis Suarez ‘has arrived’ as a Liverpool FC player

KENNY DALGLISH dismissed any comparisons between himself and Liverpool’s latest genius number seven on Saturday night – but he admitted that Luis Suarez is already a modern day Anfield legend.

The manner in which the little Uruguayan twisted his way around Christophe Berra to score another stunning goal in Liverpool’s victory over Wolves was reminiscent of Dalglish in his pomp.

But after the Reds’ 2-1 triumph the Liverpool boss refused to accept any comparisons.

“I think everyone has their own identity and it undermines the person you are comparing to anyone else,” he declared. “He is Luis Suarez.

“He is a fantastic player and that’s the end of the story. Whoever has been here before has been here before and it is not fair to compare him with other players.”

But when asked if Suarez could possibly become an Anfield legend in the mould of Rush, Dalglish and Keegan, he declared: “I think he has already arrived. I don’t think he is just on course, he has arrived. He was there when he scored his first goal against Stoke.

“I think the fans take to him because he is so genuine and 100 per cent committed. The crowd love players like that and I don’t think Luis will have any trouble getting the appreciation of the crowd.

“Our supporters are probably the most intelligent ones I have come across and, for me, they understand when someone is doing something well.

“He’s been outstanding since he came to the club, not just on it but off it. And we’re very fortunate to have him. We look forward to many more happy days with him here.

“I don’t know where he gets his ideas from. He has his own ideas and he is certainly full of them. He certainly knows how to play on and off the field. He has been an absolute credit to the football club since he joined us.”

Suarez was outstanding against Mick McCarthy’s resilient Wolves, and when he made way for Steven Gerrard with 10 minutes remaining kicked out a water bottle in frustration.

      Dalglish understood the reaction.

“He wants to be involved all the time and to play for as many minutes as he can and he wants to score,” he added. “But he enjoys winning as well.”

Dalglish also had words of praise for Suarez’s strike partner, Andy Carroll.

The big number nine produced possibly his best performance in a Reds shirt and Dalglish added: “Andy did excellent. Excellent. His performance had everything except a goal.

“He was much more like the big fella today and I’m delighted for him.

“At the end of the day we got three points and everyone made a contribution. Someone is going to get the banner headlines and if it is Luis rather than Andy then, well...it may be helpful.”

A Roger Johnson own goal and Suarez’s stunning strike gave the Reds a 2-0 half-time lead, but substitute Steven Fletcher struck early in the second half to make for an occasionally nervy second period.

Dalglish believed Liverpool were worthy victors, though.

“I think it was a deserved three points,” he said. “It was difficult at times and they put us under a bit of pressure in the first half. They scored early in the second half and that gave them a bit of momentum, but equally at the other end we hit the post and their keeper made an unbelievable save, but overall we deserved to win.

“We got a bit of good fortune with the first goal but we deserve a bit of luck because we haven’t had too much recently.

      “But we’ve got three points.

“You have to give Wolves credit. I don’t think Mick (McCarthy) was too happy with their last performance against QPR but that was a total contrast. We probably played better than that in one of the games we lost at Stoke. But we competed well and that’s very important.

“There are various attributes you need if you want to move forward and one of them is to compete properly and we certainly did that.”

Liverpool FC’s Martin Kelly eyeing a Merseyside derby challenge

MARTIN KELLY admits he’s relishing the prospect of playing in Saturday’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The young right-back impressed in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Wolves at Anfield and proved he’s overcome his recent hamstring problems.

Kelly played in the 2-2 home draw with the Blues last season but was an unused substitute during the 2-0 defeat at Goodison.

“I’m really looking forward to playing in the derby if I’m selected,” Kelly said.

“I was on the bench there last season and it was a tough game. They started well and put us under pressure. We’ll be looking for the win but it’s a derby day and it’s always difficult.

“I’m feeling good. The medical staff have worked me a lot this week to keep me on top of the hamstring injury. It was about being sensible against Wolves and I thought I did that. I’m made up I’ve played the last two games and I’m feeling fitter than ever.”

Kelly believes Saturday’s victory over Wolves was the perfect boost heading into the lunchtime clash with David Moyes’ side.

Roger Johnson’s own goal and a stunning finish from Luis Suarez put the Reds in control before Steven Fletcher reduced the deficit.

“The early goal was vital and we got another from Luis,” Kelly said.

“We were unlucky not to get a third and it’s a pity we couldn’t because that would have sealed it but we were professional and saw the game off.

“It was a great goal from Luis. He’s playing at a high standard at the minute. He is even training the same way as he is playing and it’s fantastic to have him in the team.

“I thought we defended well, got through the game and it was vital we got the three points.

“We can build on this win. It was good to get a victory going into the derby. We needed it because it’s going to be a really tough game there.

“We’ll all have to work hard in training to make sure we’re ready for next week.”

Steven Gerrard came off the bench late on as he continues to build up his match fitness after six months on the sidelines.

The inspirational skipper played his part in ensuring Liverpool held on to their narrow advantage.

“We had the fans behind us and the return of Stevie especially lifted the crowd,” Kelly said.

“With Stevie to return, it’s going to cause the gaffer even more selection problems. But we’re all in it together.”

Meanwhile, Joe Cole scored his first goal for Lille in their 1-1 draw with Lorient. The Reds midfielder, who is on a season-long loan in France, fired home from 25 yards but Lille were denied by a late equaliser.

Cole became the first English player to score in Ligue One since Chris Waddle in March 1992.

Carra to start but we must get an alternative to him in January. He was lucky not to contribute to another goal against us this season with a pass across the box on Saturday. Very dodgy.

Saha,Drenthe,Coleman,Baines & Osman are all very quick. One of new lads seems quick too. Everton's problem is that their a ****e footballing team and will rely on set pieces/crosses, an area where Skrtel is bit better IMO.

He may be a dodgy CB, but we don't really have any choice but to play him at this moment. And hopefully you're right and he isn't an issue.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Let's hope he just hates scousers.

At least the red card count will be equal then.

I hate derbies. They're a **** side but raise their game against us, making it a lot more difficult time then most other sides have against them. You can guarantee Gerrard's fitness will be tested by coco the clown too, the dirty prick.

14 - Martin Atkinson has given 14 Premier League red cards since the start of 2010/11; more than any other referee. Flourish

No point playing Carroll in this, Atkinson gives him a ticking off for jumping.

Worried about Suarez picking up a yellow - if he does he'll miss the Mancs. Nightmare that.

If we're a goal or two ahead with 20-30 minutes to go, I'd get him off sharpish.
