Rush excited by options

Ian Rush today explained why he believes the firepower available at Kenny Dalglish's disposal can help Liverpool achieve success this season.
Anfield's all-time record goalscorer feels the striking quartet of Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll, Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt provide an array of varying options in attack - and he's confident they, along with Steven Gerrard, can supply the goals that lead the Reds to glory.
Rush told Liverpoolfc.tv: "It's always pleasing to see so many options - we've got four or five strikers who can change a game.
"They're different options and make Liverpool stronger than last season.
"It was great to see Steven Gerrard and Craig Bellamy come on to strengthen the team against Everton - and that's what Liverpool have got this season.
"I think we can go onto better things now with those striking options. If it's not happening in a game for 60 or 70 minutes, we've got two or three options to bring on from the bench."
He added: "Everyone talks about the aerial threat of Andy, but he scored with his foot against Everton.
"When Andy and Suarez are playing together, I think Suarez can move into space off him. He's a very good reader of the game and he's on fire at the moment. He looks eager to play, gives 100 per cent and that's what supporters want.
"You've also got Craig Bellamy with pace. He likes playing on the left and helped make the goal for Carroll on Saturday, and then there's Dirk Kuyt who is somebody else who gives 100 per cent every game."
All four of Liverpool's senior strikers played a part in helping the side to a 2-0 Merseyside derby victory over Everton on Saturday.
Carroll broke the deadlock with a neat 71st minute finish against the Blues before Suarez added the Reds' second.
In the case of the former, it was his first Barclays Premier League goal of the season - and Rush is convinced there will be many more to come from the No.9.
"We know he is going to score goals, but as a striker it is always nice to get your first goal," he said. "To get your first league goal of the season against Everton will do his confidence no end of good.
"We know he is a great player and I am looking forward to seeing more goals from him."Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

Gerrard set to push on

Liverpool first-team coach Steve Clarke believes it is now the ideal time for Steven Gerrard to step up his fitness work and make further progress in his comeback from injury.
The Reds skipper has only recently returned to action following a groin operation which kept him on the sidelines for six months.
He has so far made three appearances as a substitute as manager Kenny Dalglish looks to carefully ease him back after such a lengthy lay-off.
Dalglish has also welcomed Fabio Capello's decision not to call Gerrard into the England squad for Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro, and Liverpool will continue to take things slowly.
However, while they will not be taking any risks, the coaching staff are planning to gradually increase the intensity of Gerrard's training sessions to get him back in peak condition and available to start games.
"For Steven it's just a progression. He's coming back from a long-term injury and we'll try to treat him as cautiously and carefully as we can," Clarke told the club's official website.
"Obviously there will be a time when he is going to have to push on - and I think this is the time now.
"We've only got a very small group of players left behind because we've got a lot of players away on international duty. There were only six players training on Wednesday, but we managed to get a lot of good work into them with such a small number.
"On Thursday we'll bring up the reserve-team squad to join in, which will give us more numbers.
"With Steven it has been well documented that we're looking after him. He's going to have to push himself in the coming weeks - and the more minutes we get into him, the better."
Liverpool designed special programmes for Gerrard to help in his rehabilitation and Clarke has been impressed by his progress.
He said: "After you've been out for a long time, you struggle with the pace of the game and the size of the pitches, so we worked with him in small areas and then gradually started to make the areas bigger. Every step is important.
"He's handled the steps we've given him so far very well and we'll just look to push him on."Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

Sir Alex Ferguson has written to Manchester United's supporters to urge them to improve their behaviour at away matches or risk their ticket allocations being slashed.
Ferguson has become personally involved after United learned that their usual 3,000 allocation for the game at Liverpool on 15 October has been reduced to 1,960 because of problems involving their supporters at recent matches.
Twelve Premier League clubs refused to give United their full allocation last season and the champions are concerned it is becoming a trend that is costing innocent supporters the chance to follow the club while also putting the team at a disadvantage. A letter from Ferguson has been sent to all the United fans who have tickets for Anfield to express his concerns. Ferguson urges supporters to "respect the stewards and follow ground regulations" and says the alternative is that the club will continue to miss out on tickets for away fixtures.
"Despite intense lobbying by the club on your behalf, there will only be just over 1,900 United fans at Anfield," he says. "We can't allow this situation to continue. I've said many times that your support is a vital part of our success and, trust me, the players do notice when your numbers are cut."
One of the key issues is the persistent blocking of aisles and gangways by supporters standing during matches, making a potential obstruction for emergency services, but the club admit they have received other complaints. United officials raised the issue at the last meeting of the club's official fans' forum, explaining that "one of the reasons provided by clubs for giving a reduced allocation was safety, but the main reason was supporters' behaviour".
Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland are among the Premier League clubs who have punished United, whereas Leeds United did the same as a precautionary measure ahead of their Carling Cup tie at Elland Road last month.
The clubs are acting on the advice of safety advisory groups, independent bodies whose representatives mainly originate from the local council and police. However, United have noted that Everton, using the same authority as Liverpool, have not penalised them and the Old Trafford club have been disappointed to learn that Liverpool have subsequently sold the tickets that have been withdrawn to home fans.
A delegation led by United's chief operating officer, Michael Bolingbroke, and the club secretary, John Alexander, has been to Anfield to discuss the issue and determine how in future seasons they can get a full allocation once again. There is an already a problem at United of too many fans for not enough tickets, with 164,000 applications for the 55,000 away tickets they were allocated in the league last season.
The club are also discussing the matter with the Premier League to get some clarity on the rules and establish whether clubs who remove tickets should be allowed to sell them to their own fans.
Wigan Athletic routinely allow United unusually large ticket allocations but withdrew some before last season's game at the DW Stadium, and United's information is that they were then sold as part of corporate packages. United's argument isthat it is unfair on them to be responsible for fans who have not bought tickets via the club and that the home club should not be allowed to make a profit out of it.
That rug really tied the room together.

I honestly think most teams have become obsessed with this (taking long shots) and De Gea has not proved as bad as people make out. I think looking for the opportunity stops players choosing better options.Originally posted by BigChief View PostAs rcsaemore has said, De Gea should be targetted all match and for that we need players that can shoot from outside the box, while offer problems in the air from crosses. With Carroll's left foot and size he ticks both boxes!
I'm happy for Carroll to start but I'm not convinced by this logic.
That team looks awful to me. We need some sort of balance in midfield and the ability to hold the ball.Originally posted by BigChief View PostAdam can shoot from distance and deliver perfect crosses so he's another definite starter. Gerrard has to play behind Carroll, another shooter/deliverer. With Kuyt targetting Evra he also has to start, but he is not know for shooting. That means from the left we can't afford to play Downing as he has so far not crossed very well nor offered too much shooting from outside. Bellamy has a rasping shot plus killer pace and I would favour him on the left.
This might not be a bad game to rest Suarez (and we'll have no choice) to bring him on in the second half.
Carroll
Bellamy Gerrard Kuyt
Adam Lucas
Manure have 3 choices: 1) to drop Gayboy for Lindegaard, nail in Demento's coffin 2) play wholly defensive 4-5-1 to double team Adam and nullify Gerrard, mark of respect and fear for fierce rivals or 3) go all out attack and try to outscore us, risky strategy.
The only way I can see Manure beating us if we play as lethargically as we did against Spurs. I'll be shocked if the fans, Dalglish, Carra and Gerrard allow any player to give less than 110% against the ****s.
You are vastly over confident IMO - United will do what they have done all season, set up to attack and rely on the fact that they are very good at it to mean that the number of chances the opposition generate is largely academic."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Which is option 3 as I mentioned. If they stick to what they're good at then it means they'll be looking to outscore us and they'll sure concede like hell if Young and Nani are going to park in our half. Which exposes Evra to Kuyt on his own, always been good for us in the past. And Bellamy on his own against Smalling, Jones or Fabio. Which is also fine by me.Originally posted by dww View PostUnited will do what they have done all season, set up to attack and rely on the fact that they are very good at it to mean that the number of chances the opposition generate is largely academic.Last edited by BigChief; 06-10-11, 07:35 PM.One tit for another.
