Our fans cheerfully used to pelt John Barnes with bananas at corner kicks when he was at Watford and also used to direct chants of "hey you, Chester Zoo" at West Ham's Clyde Best, one of the very first black players in the top flight. But other clubs' fans are just as bad. That doesn't excuse it of course but demonstrates the boorishness and stupidity of many football supporters. Those days really were terrible
Absolutely agree. And it STILL goes on! All over the country, every single week. In football stadiums. Outside of football stadiums. In the BNP. Outside of the BNP. In the streets, in universities. It's everywhere, it's subtle, I've seen and heard it from all types of society, from the rich to the poor, in every city I've lived in England.

@MirrorFootball you're lying - I was near the incident! The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
