As ever with these things it depends on your age. Whilst I've been watching Liverpool (1964 onwards) I can tell you categorically that Neal, Carragher, Jones and McManaman wouldn't get within a million miles of Liverpool's best XI.
Smith was an incomparably superior RB to Neal and was also a far superior CB to Carragher, as were Yeats, Lawrenson and Gillespie for that matter. Hughes was incalculably better than Jones at LB (I assume you mean Joey as Rob was RB - but he was much better than either). The luxury player that was McManaman had several superiors on the right, Callaghan springs to mind instantly, but there ar several other better candidates than McManaman

Phil Neal----Alan Hansen-----Mark Lawrenson-----Emlyn Hughes
Kevin Keegan---Steven Gerrard---Graeme Souness---John Barnes
---------------Kenny Dalglish------Ian Rush---------------------
Subs: Bruce Grobbelaar, Steve Nicol, Phil Thompson, Jan Molby, Steve Heighway, Robbie Fowler
April 15th 1989 is a day that all football fans should never forget. It was a day when 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives at a football match at Hillsborough. Rest In Peace 96 - You'll Never Walk Alone
