Funnily enough though, when he came to us he supposedly had a great rep. for saving penalties, but I can't really remember him actually stopping many for us. He went the right way for 2 of the ones they missed yesterday, but he didn't actually get a touch on them did he?

        I dont think he did.

Last pen I can remember him saving was Rooney at Old Trafford with rooney followed up and scored.

Jamie Redknapp boiled my piss yesterday going on about Suarez and Bellamy not being part of the initial five to take spot-kicks and I think he was alluding to 'bottle', whilst not even considering Suarez's penalty record here and at Ajax. And who's to say they weren't penalty takers six and seven ... the tit.

I think if you asked any Liverpool fan who they'd want to take our penalties currently, Gerrard, Kuyt and Adam would be the first three names picked. But anyhoo, I digress.

It's a great record looking back at it - I quite like penalty shoot-outs when other teams are involved, when it's us, I'm a wreck.

I think we have lost one shoot out, ever - against Wimbledon in the mid 90s. I have no idea how many we have won, but in finals alone there is:

            European Cup, Rome 1984
            League Cup, Birmingham 2001
            European Cup, Milan 2005
            League Cup, Cardiff 2012

Crazy. I don't know how they do it.

I think it was a fair question. It was a great pen, but Johnson ahead of Suarez? I can sort of understand Bellamy not wanting to take one.

Suarez has proved he's a terrible penalty taker...

According to LFC history Reina has saved 3 pens in regular match time and if I remember correctly he saved 3 in the FA Cup final in 2006 vs West Ham and 2 in the CL semi-final vs Chelsea in 2007

When it comes down to it how are the takers decided? Presumably the manager has an idea but how much does that change depending on confidence, performance in the game and how the players are feeling at the end of extra time?

In extra time I was looking at the possible takers I had thought Gerrard, Adam, Suarez, Kuyt and Bellamy, only 3 of those took them.

I would imagine Downing took one because his confidence was high, Johnson was an odd one he's a good striker of the ball but you'd have thought Bellamy and Suarez would be ahead of him. I wonder if him (and perhaps Downing) only took them because others didn't want to.

I think Suarez was just wrecked by the end of the game, maybe he didnt feel like he was physically and probably mentally up to it. He struggled at times as it was.

No he didn't get a touch but he would have if they were on target

In all seriousness, there's something about his presence which makes me think the penalty taker is more likely to miss than score.

I don't think Redknapp can raise the point; Kenny will have asked who definitely wants to take one - if Johnson has answered yes to that question whilst Suarez contemplates why he went wrong (at Anfield) on two occasions, then fair enough.

If Skrtel stepped up for penalty six, then fair enough - it's a valid point to raise, in my opinion.

Cant imagine him turning down a pen, was probably just told not to take one like Luis Garcia in Istanbul.

I don't know what Redknapps going on about. If we had lost the shoot out I'd have been pissed off, but we won so I don't think its a big deal. So we chose the best guys. Gerrads pen was a great save, Adams was dire and the rest were fine. If Bellamy and Suarez didn't fancy it then they are right not to take one.

                                Suarez would definitely have missed.
