Define better. Wouldn't a regular place and responsibility in a good defence not better than a bit part role?

I can't see any of the kids we have let go move on to better things, our academy doesn't help much

aye mate was only being facetious.....But realistically Boro are not better than Liverpool and think Kev was saying which youngsters have gone onto better things the list is endless of players who have gone onto be good players for there club but ultimately not good enough for Liverpool the likes of Warnock, Welsh, Raven, Spearing, Shelvey etc the list is endless

They way I looked at was it was players we let go early, and turned out to be good enough for us. There is not many players like that. But for the players mentioned a move was better for them, I agree.

It's just that I tend to focus solely on LFC, and don't care much about players after they leave.

Any leftback is better than none at all.
In the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.

I don't think that any of the players we have let go we are now looking back and thinking 'I wish we'd kept them a bit longer'

I think that the academy does help out though, yes ideally we would like to see more players like Gerrard, Fowler, Owen, McManaman, but the truth is you are lucky to get a player like that every 5 years or so.

The other thing the academy does is bring money in from players that we have developed, who haven't really made it: Ibe £15m, Smith £6m, plus a few million for Robinson, Kelly, Spearing etc plus fees from loaning out players like Wisdom etc. These sums alone probably cover the cost of running the academy. We've also had Sterling who we sold for the best part of £50m. That's before you take into account the money saved from not having to buy a Gerrard or a Carragher etc.

I'd like to see the academy bring through players that could be squad players who would come in and do a job when needed rather than buying these types of players for 5-10 million a go and this would allow us to focus our spending on key players, if we can bring through another Gerrard etc then great but we can't and shouldn't rely on that.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Is that a Burnley fan quote?

I know Tomkins has touched on this before, and Flano has had terrible injury problems that really set him back, but the whole unknown and unquantifiable chemistry thing is so big in football. Some players thrive with a certain set of circumstances and players around them, then they move to another set of players and circumstances and they can look completely ****. They're the same player, but the dynamics just mean it's different. It's a completely lame and crap anecdotal example, but when I was a kid I played for a Sunday team and I was like the star of the team. I captained my school team, where the games were much less regular, but still - I never really replicated my Sunday performances for them, even though I was skipper. My CM partner was better than me, and my role sort of changed and I could never be anything like the same player I was for my Sunday team. There are so many unknown or unmeasurable factors that it basically reduces everything to "none of us know anything, and it's all ****ing pot luck". They're all good footballers - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Weird.

This is similar to something I have been thinking about for a while and (to me at least) it seems that it affects our youth/former youth players alot. Flanagan is someone who was a regular in our side that finish 2nd, but is currently unable to get a game at Burnley, as you say injuries probably are a big factor there. Other examples are Andre Wisdom or Jay Spearing, players who were on either promising at one point or on the fringes of the squad who you thought aren't really LFC standard but could probably do a job at a low PL club or top Championship club, but when they get those opportunities struggle to perform and seem to settle at a lower level.

There are players like Adam Morgan, who was fairly highly rated at one point and if I remember correctly played a few cup/european games who is now struggling playing non-league football. So many of our former players who don't make it seem to drop down alot of levels when they leave us and rarely make it back up. There are only really a handful of our former players that get regular games at other PL or championship clubs, compare this to Man Utd and half the bottom half of the PL and top half of the championship seems to have been crawling with their former players for the last few years (Tom Cleverly, John O'Shea, Frazer Campbell, Phil Bardsley, Darron Gibson, Ryan Shawcross, Kieron Richardson, Wes Brown ...)

im glad jurgen has gotten over his reluctance to make better use of the loan system and get some serious game time for some of our youngsters.

Yeah, there's a few interesting ones in the list, I suppose Kent & Ojo particularly. Nobody over the age of 22 either

I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue

What tale shall serve me here among
                        Mine angry and defrauded young?

I wonder if Allan will ever actually find his way to Liverpool?
