I think Gotze could be had for maybe 25 million, 30 tops. They hadn't bought Downing yet so I don't it can be ruled out.

Logical question: why would he have left the German champions to come to us? Why would he drop out of the Champion's League to come to us? He has no connection to us whatsoever so it would NOT have happened.

Sadly we'll never know who was to blame for each signing but, between he and Kenny, they spunked the ONE opportunity we had to spend Champion's League team money without actually being in the competition. That's forever going to be a horrendous stain on the front of our trousers.

No, his agent/Dad said before he went away to the U23 World Cup that he WAS interested in joining us and the project that we were starting but we ignored him because he was "a risk" and chose to sign Downing instead.

Oh, believe me, I'm hung up about Mata/Downing, but I reserve the right to get annoyed/hung up/angry/irritated about Gotze as well, if there is a grain of truth in it. We could probably triple his salary at least, that might make his head turn? Playing with Suarez and Gerrard? Not much of a chance maybe but the journos are laying it out there and look convincing.

I don't think there IS a grain of truth in it. Dortmund wouldn't be actively shipping the best young talent in German football around like that. They know what he's worth to the team and it's a hell of a lot more than he's worth in transfer fee.

The way Rory has worded it, it could simply be that FSG were like "hmmm, that kid looks good - wanna sign him?"

Pinch of salt obviously but I was told in the summer - yes, then - that Mata wanted to come to us, but we decided to pursue Downing instead.

Rory Smith is normally pretty reliable though to be fair, other than Tony Barrett he's the one I'd be most tempted to believe when it comes to LFC info. We might have wanted to at least enquire about him, it doesn't mean we would have pursued it though when we heard the price.
