The original argument was that we could have signed gotze over henderson which imo is wrong because the two arent comparable in terms of positions and how they like to play. But if someone said that we could have signed gotze or mata over downing then its a slightly different story.

but again kenny wanted a winger which mata isnt. its not his game so he wasnt the right type of player to fit kennys gameplan. was it a mistake yes imo because mata is another special talent, but either way mata or gotze cant play in a traditional 442 or 4411 which kenny used because neither are chalk on the boots type wide players whereas downing is.

can downing play in rodgers 433 system - probably not but either of mata and gotze can so imo it comes down to which players suit your system at the time you're making the decision. Kenny made the downing, carroll and henderson ones based on what the system he wanted to play.
I think this point about players fitting systems is a key one with regards to the last few years transfers.

We have really struggled in part because we have changed what we have wanted to do in terms of style. A lack of continuity has also made it less likely for signings to fit in/develop over time.

I'm still not 100% sure sacking Dalglish was the right decision but now we have we have to give Rodgers and his plans long enough to bed in before we evaluate his signings.

Comolli is, if nothing else, good at PR. Not sure he's a great judge of players but I think he does understand the issues around signings more than most.

        i agree.

weve gone from 4231 to 442 to 442/4411 to 433/4213 in the space of three or four seasons so there is a wide variety of recruitment in the squad without any specific patterns or consistency.

we can criticise comolli all we like but the truth is that he took his brief from the manager and his way of playing. So if kenny told him to get an out and out winger and comolli drew up his list of targets and there's a very small chance that neither gotze nor mata were on that list because they're not wingers.

what he has to take the blame for is the stupid fees we paid for the players and the salaries we agreed to pay.

Comolli's been on the radio again talking about the transfers he was involved in at LFC. Has anybody heard any of it?

I did but I didn't listen to it. I was planning on listening to it but in the hour before John Motson and Steve Claridge were bringing their admirable intellects to bear on the weekend's matters of import.

Motson said Koscielny shouldn't have been sent off because it ruined the entertainment, although it wasn't totally clear whether he blames the referee or the rules. And then about five minutes later he said Kompany is 'no angel' and it was his own fault he got sent off because he knows challenges like his are likely to get a red card.

Why Koscielny didn't bring his sending off on himself wasn't explored, perhaps because that giant turd, Mark Chapman, was presenting the programme and he has all the forensic capability of a dead puddle.

Claridge also spoke rubbish. Barnes was also on the panel but at least his points had an internal integrity.

FFS, why are people allowed on radio to spout stupid, half-baked opinions like that? I mean, it's one thing if Dan phones a phone-in, we can all have a laugh, but Motson is paid for it. He's as thick a f*cking plank.

            Motson not LDP. Although...

Anyway I was so infuriated I just had 5Live on for background noise for the rest of the time I was in the kitchen cleaning a bike.

            .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I love it when a commentator thinks he is an analyst.

I didn't listen to this show so this is kind of a random comment. I really can't stand John Motson. His commentary is abysmal, awful, terrible. None of his commentary makes sense. I hope he retires soon.
