I don't quite get that - we need to get into the CL positions - the UEFA is worthless to us long term. We don't need to be in the top 3 necessarily but top 4 is a definite and achievable goal.

I'm warming to Martinez. Possibly partly because of the hostility towards him. Fundamentally I like him and think there are definite good aspects to the way he sets his team up to play. If we are going down the road of a DoF and a manager/coach he seems like as good an option as is available.

Obviously we should sack of the DoF plan and get Rafa, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. I would be pretty happy with van Gaal I suppose, but that is the only other likely option I have much time for. A combined van Gaal/Martinez operation sounds like fun to me.

Motivation was never a problem for Di Matteo, so all this credit he keeps getting for 'pulling the group together' is a bit much imo.
On a similar basis I used to quite rate Avram Grant. He was described by someone as a placebo manager - which I now think is the perfect description. Very hard to judge Di Matteo on his time at Chelsea. He did pretty well at West Brom though.

Thats quite a good take on 'Robbie', if they were to hire he will be basically starting from scratch. Plus, how does he top his first season...?

How can anyone get a chance to prove themselves on this basis?

I can understand your worries, but we need a leap of faith both from the owners and the fans if we are to get back into the top 4 in the next couple of years - this is essential.

I won't judge Martinez on his past experience, but rather on his attitude and his responses to pressure situations. And on this basis, I think he has shown a lot to be impressed with. He deserves to be given a chance at a bigger club and this situation is the exact opposite to the Hodgson appointment.

This comes across as quite curmudgeonly, or at least begrudging.

Give the man his due: he took a team that was weaker and more disjointed than when Mourinho was in charge and did what many others before him couldn't.

Who knows what happens behind closed doors, but he was the catalyst for something, whether apparent or otherwise, that took that team across the line. Just because it can't be described or perceived, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Why do we need to take a leap of faith. We need an experienced manager not a young man with a history of surviving relegation. And also why does he deserve a chance at a bigger club, and even if he does why us.
It's a prediction thread on a wish list.

Experience doesn't mean success - cf: Hodgson.

The experience that Martinez has from those years with Wigan could be as valuable as 15 years for another manager with the experience of only managing a club with comfortable means, and appearing to punch above his weight.

Besides, experienced managers with a high pedigree don't appear to be queuing up for this job so we do ned a leap of faith, in my opinion, because we won't be choosing from the christmas list.

I like your argument. But I just can't get excited by him, I feel his belief will be a little like hodgeson, expecting a lot less than we are. Im starting to see a few fans wanting him, I think I must be missing something.

A 'leap of faith' is right but it's a critical time for us, we either fall away from the top, or we get back in amongst it. I almost think that I'd prefer Van Gaal - somebody with proven pedigree - to get us back into the Champions League and then look to the future, with the new incoming manager atleast having the lure of European football to entice new players to hide the pull an upcoming manager might lack.

It feels like too big a risk and whilst you're right that the appointments of Hodgson and (potentially) Martinez are completely different, I just think it's too soon for Martinez.

Again, you're right, we can only judge Martinez going forward, so if he does join us, he will have my full support, but you can't hide the fact the pressure situations of relegation that you might be referring to previously, are his own doing.

I've a feeling Roberto Martinez will disappear quite quickly from #lfc hunt for a new manager. Hearing search remains wide and far reaching

                        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Ah. The 'Tele' part of his username might be the clue.

Yeah, i really begrudge him winning the champs league, just don't what i'll do now.

Just giving an opinion based on what we know went on, which was... players not really happy with AVB, wanting him gone...and once he was gone, they needed little motivation to perform from then on, imo.

It's a short run of games, that went well in the cups, Bayern had their chances to win the final, they didn'nt, but Chelsea hardly starved them of chances to score more than they did, and that's football sometimes.

edit: f****n Di Matteo! ****! why why why...
