'Steve Clarke, Dalglish's assistant, handed in his resignation out of loyalty to the 61-year-old Scot, but it has been rejected.' http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18110974

First I've heard of that (the rejection part, that is)

I think that many many people do the same though, ie not take into consideration what was happening at the same time as our 'decline' at the hands of Rafa

That, coupled with the once again over-simplified fact that he's had beef with every board at every club he's managed bar Madrid B, might also sway things against him IMO

For ages I've been absolutely nonplussed at others' inability to see Rafa as I do, but speaking objectively, its understandable why many wouldnt want him
There's no denying that Rafa made mistakes. And I was a reluctant advocate of the decision to let him go too. But yes, what you say is right.
      Oh I don't know.

Why would anyone be upset about Dalglish? He knew the requirement this season was a top 4 place at least and he missed it by miles, being nearer in points to the bottom 3.

The worst top flight performance for 58 years is not good grounds to be upset about the architect of that failure being removed from his post.

Dalglish has gone and he isn't coming back. I've seen Shankly, Paisley, Fagan and his glorious treble, Dalglish, Houllier (and his treble too) and Benitez come and go. The one common thing is that the club goes on. Let's hope we get the right man and the right team around him. I'd give my right arm for it to be Benitez again, but if it isn't then I'll get behind the new man.

We've been through this before, and I completely disagree. I'm not a huge believer in net spending, and when you compare Utd, Chelsea and City's cost (not net) of starting 11 and bench through the season, then we're way behind, with them all in the region of £250 and £300m. The cost of each player is far more indicative of the quality of player being purchased, than the net spend of an entire squad. Then of course you get the likes of Carroll who throw a spanner in the works but overspending to that degree is very rare.

I'm coming around to the idea of AVB now as a longterm prospect.

I was. I didn't want Kenny to be sacked, replaced, resign etc.

I've spoken at length on these forums about the bigger picture, the football we had played and the direction we were going, so I can't be bothered to type it again, but I would have had no issues with Kenny being in charge right now.

Yes, he's gone - so I'm moving on, but I'm cautious about where we are going.

I defy any Liverpool fan not to be genuinely upset that Dalglish has gone. I actually think it maybe for the best, but i am still very sad.

Can the thread title be updated to include this : , Rodgers says no.

Hopefully by the end of next week this thread will be the only thing visible under Liverpool FC with a long list of candidates names for all to see.

Yes, I know, you don't understand such concepts. Not believng in something is irrelevant when it is demonstrable.

CJ ... It would make things very interesting if I could do the achievement cycles for prospective managers.

If I could get the data I would have already done them. Something tells me rafa might be passed his peak periods already but alas we will never know because I dont have his time of birth.

He apeared to be unable to turn things around and after quite a few years in charge was actually starting to go backwards rather than forwards from what was a very promising start.

Personally I would give AVB a go. He is young and has success behind him even if it was relatively limited. I wouldnt read too much into failure at Chelsea. Some big names have failed there.

Finally if we were to go for a british manager then I would go for Martin ONeill. I think he would be a great fit with Liverpool.
Another revisionist who chooses to ignore the fact that Benitez, as time went on, was more and more operating with one arm tied behind his back with a sell-to-buy policy and with his promised transfer budget being changed to include the cost of any pay rises for players renewing contracts.

If he'd had proper resources and wasn't stitched up by certain players - one in particular - working with others in the club to oust him then we would never have been in the sorry position of taking on Hodgson to satisfy certain individuals' sense of self-importance. The we also wouldn't have needed to make the mistake of bringing Dalglish back to clear up the mess
