Ok, now you got me worried. If AVB is not able to get players on his side then we're in trouble. But the likes of Sturridge, Mata, Miereles, Ramirez wouldn't say a bad thing against him surely? And they have been key players this season despite the hype Drogba (I'm f*cking off to ACN again BYE), Lampard (have I actually done anything this season?) and Terry (vote BNP) have been getting.
Do the Porto players think AvB is a cunt, or is just the Chelsea mob?
I haven't seen a bad word said about him from Porto, but it's tougher to be outwardly critical of someone who had a ton of success. (By the same token, it's easy for everyone from Chelsea with a minor quibble to make him seem like a prick. Fail, and the knives come out.) Personally, I don't care if a manager's a prick, most are anyway. If he can connect with the players, it doesn't really matter.
Rafa was trying to manage an injury Torres was carrying. In fact, a week later Torres was ruled out of our next league match and was on his way back to Spain to visit a knee specialist. Hindsight and all that...
Like Jose, AVB is arrogant. Unlike Jose, he isn't a self publicist. This means he will not endear himself to the media.
All this would have been fine had he backed up his cockiness with results, but at Chelsea he didn't.
He was asked to reshape the Chelsea squad. He did that, but by marginalising his best players, he risked a drop in form and resentment.
When he wasn't getting the appropriate results with the young guns, his job was questioned and he turned to the old timers for help. Not surprisingly, they turned a deaf ear to him.
Had Chelsea stuck with him, he'd have let the seniors go this summer and Chelsea would have been on an upward curve. However, whilst Chelsea will be back to square one next season, they won the CL so no one can say firing him was the wrong decision.
I think in the LFC squad, a place would be found for Gerrard. Maxi may also get a spot should he wish to stick around. I think Carra and Kuyt would not be first teamers though due to a limited technique.
I'm not sure many fans would be opposed to the above. And anyhow, Kuyt & Carra have already played second fiddle this year so keeping them in reserve would be no sweeping move.
In short, I think AVB would be a huge success long term, and a decent option in the short term.
