It's all about opinion, but a guaranteed scorer will always be sought after - and Owen has ALWAYS produced the goods at the very, very highest level, including the international stage.

I can't think of a better out-and-out striker at any of the clubs you list. I can assure you that Owen would certainly score more goals than Rooney or Saha at Man U for starters.

maybe, but only if he stayed fit for long enough. i'm sure he'll get 20+ next season.....against the likes of preston, plymouth and burnley!

Besides, you're forgetting one minor detail - if Owen was so sought after, how come when he left Madrid his options were some weak interest from us (but only on the cheap), and that mega footballing power known as newcastle?!

if you google it you will find it is attributed to Churchill, the Marx Brothers may have used it before or after, but Churchill cwertainly used it

**** me lads some of you need to take of the myopic specs you're wearing.

First of all his departure; he was down to his last year of his contract, what offer was on the table from the club? Rafa and his (lack of)man management skills came to the fore here. Did Rafa really want him? Think back to the Gerrard saga when SG himself said he didn't think the club wanted him.

So he goes to Real for a price that is reasonable considering the situation with his contract. Then having played second fiddle for most of the year, despite scoring at a good rate, the next season comes, the regime changes and he's told he'll continue to be second fiddle and isn't needed.

So wouldn't a "greedy git" sit on the bench and earn his cash? No he decides to go somewhere where he's wanted. He wanted to come to Liverpool but seeing as he was under contract to Real they decided the selling price not MO.

So when we offer £11m and the Barcodes offer £17m, its hardly likely that Real will not take the extra £5m is it? So MO had the choice of sitting rotting on the bench at Real at the age of 27. Plus it was a World Cup year (the pinnacle of most players careers) and possibly his last chance to play on the highest stage at his peak.

And the one thing we are forgetting is his strike rate for us. He scored goals for fun for us and yes he was injury prone but he always managed to score his share.

Of course he's proud of playing for England - so's Stevie G - but is that really so bad? He can only play for England if he's doing it at club level and he was throughout his career for us.

As for booing him? Despicable un-Liverpool fan like behaviour for a player who gave us everything from the age of 11 to 24 (13 years for those who cannot count!). Those who booed should hang their heads in shame - but I'll bet they were dancing in the streets when he scored any of the 100+ goals including two to win us the FA Cup.

I am baffled by the sheep like behaviour of our fans over MO when no one but those close to MO know the full story.

And yet Fowler after all his lack of professional attitude after injuries and off the pitch gets returns like a conquering hero. Owen scored 158 goals for us before he left, Fowler scored 171.

Perhaps a little more respect should be shown towards Owen than has been shown.

The point is that he made bad decisions, he could have given Rafa a chance, all he had to do was sign a one year extension to see were Rafa was taking the team, and he would have got a Euro cup out of it, and most likely a higher league finish for us.

However he wanted to test himself elsewhere for some reason, I don't believe he was forced out, hence the attempt to try and sign him back. But then he went to Madrid, and didn't want to stick it out there either, so he panicked and seemingly expected us to buy him back for more than we sold him which is ludicrous.

When we refused he decided to cut his losses and go to the Barcodes to make sure he was playing first team, and the rest is history.

The point is whoever does his decision making is terrible, it was a bad decision to leave LFC when he did, it was a bad decision to go to Madrid in a setup that never looked like it was going to use, but it was a bad decision to leave them so early on - he might have got a look in the following season. And most of all it was a bad decision to go the Geordies, every man and his dog could see that.

A lot of people still resent him for not giving Rafa a chance and for doing LFC out of a decent transfer fee, and I think that's fair point. If he hadn't made that 1st bad decision, the others wouldn't have followed.

Spion Kop.................Yes Owen was told if he didnt agree to join Newcastle Madrid woiuld keep him on the bench/in the stands.............during world cup year, and I think we all know where Owens prorities lie re England,, I think what annoys a lot of people is that be didnt have the Balls to call Real's bluff

It is strange that he left us to win things and ends up in the trophy free city of Newcastle.....................Whilst we on the other hand,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Owen has been in decline since late 2001 when he 'did' his hamstring against Spurs, think it was October/Nove,ber....

He's lost that spark, that extra yard of pace and most importantly the confidence that once made him such a dangerous striker.

He's a spent force and we're better than that now.

                          Onwards and upwards.

Great striker in his prime - which fortunately was for us - his later career seems blighted by injury. The game has also changed, I doubt he could be as effective for us as he was in the past. Never mind, I actually think Dirky is better, takes me back to my youth and my obsession with Kevin Keegan (in at totally non-gay way natch).
