There was disappointment for Liverpool U18s on Saturday morning when Chelsea came back from a goal down to win 2-1 in London.
Steve Cooper's side played some excellent football at times and took the lead through a brilliant solo goal from Daniel Trickett-Smith.
However, they couldn't hold onto the lead against a strong side and Chelsea came back to win 2-1.
Cooper told Liverpoolfc.com: "I have no complaints about the way we approached the game and we were a little bit unlucky to be honest.
"Dan produced a bit of magic to give us the lead but we are kicking ourselves in the foot at the moment with some of our defending.
"Chelsea are a very strong side but we were resilient and created chances, but it was just frustrating to lose the game."
Liverpool U18s team: Ryan Fulton, Nathan Quirk, Joe Maguire, Michael Williams, Niall Heaton, Yalany Baio, Kristoffer Peterson, Jordan Lussey, Jerome Sinclair (Sam Gainford), Dan Trickett-Smith (Cameron Brannagan), Alex O'Hanlon (Shay Ojo).
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?
Rodolfo Borrell is hoping his young squad can rise to the occasion this season when the NextGen Series gets underway with a tough trip away to Inter Milan on Wednesday afternoon.
Last season Borrell's charges came third in the competition, and this term they also face Rosenborg of Norway and German giants Borussia Dortmund in their group.
Most of the regular members of the U21 squad will not be involved in the NextGen Series squad as it's an U19 tournament and the likes of Michael Ngoo and Jack Robinson are now ineligible for it.
Last season, Borrell's men lost in the semi-finals to Ajax but came third after beating Marseille in the play-off.
This campaign, the competition is even stronger with the likes of Barcelona, CSKA Moscow, Chelsea, Arsenal and PSG fielding strong teams.
The party will leave the Academy bound for Italy on Tuesday, and Borrell insists the squad are under no illusions as to the test they will face from the reigning NextGen Series champions.
He told Liverpoolfc.com: "It is going to be difficult because we are in a very tough group and it's a tough first game for us against Inter Milan.
"They won the NextGen Series last season and they are a very tough and physical team so it's going to be a big test for us.

"Last season we managed to finish third out of 16 teams in the NextGen Series which was a magnificent achievement. In terms of results we had highs and lows because we faced top-level teams and had mixed results, but there were a lot of positives from our lads.
"This season will be tough because this is a competition for lads born in 1994. Last season we had a bigger and stronger squad but some of them now can't play.
"The squad will be mostly made up of the U18s team and it is a big opportunity for them to play at a higher level.
"It is a step-up for some of them but we can only get positives out of playing in this competition. It is a great experience for the players and they will learn quickly.
"We will be positive and try to get good performances and good results."
The match in Milan kicks-off at 2pm BST on Wednesday and we will have delayed coverage of the match on LFC TV and LFC TV Online.

Without Robinson, Flanno, Sterling, Ngoo, Silva, Suso we are going to get absolutely tonked in this competition. Apart from one or two borderline players, our under 18 team is very uninspiring at the moment.

They lost 2-1 to the Chavs the other day yeah? Are they any good?

I'd much rather we played younger lads, got beat but 1 or 2 showed themselves good enough and progressed through into the reserves than pick an 'old' and stronger squad just for the sake of results.

I have a friend who has just started working for Chelsea, his first games to watch/cover for them were 21's on Friday and then the age groups over the weekend.
He says that Chelsea are packed full of strong, quick, good individuals whereas we are more of a team.
He didn't comment on who was better etc... just different ways of trying to bring players through
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

Yeah it gives the next crop a chance to prove themselves.

Interesting. Wish he was at LFC though instead. It'd be nice to get an insiders perspective of our future talent.
I agree Birdman. I was disappointed when Shelvey was roped into this competition in the first NextGen game last season - against Lisbon (?). The youngsters need this exposure and I would be happy with just one player making it (hopefully Pelosi or Gainsford).
All over 2-3. Didn't pay full attention but decent performance from Sama. Adorjan took 2 lovely set-pieces, Ibe a threat. More work to be done for the Young Reds though worth remembering that a lot of players who could've played tonight have travelled to Switzerland.
Sounds like the lads were unlucky there, much like the first team. Nice to hear Adorjan is stepping up to the plate and delivering. BR's policy of giving the youngster a fair opportunity has had the right impact. Fantastic management skills.
"Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley
From what the bloke was saying we were outclassed by a notably better and more experienced side, think the scoreline flatters us slightly but they're only kids. Sinclair played, he's only 16 tomorrow.
This was the starting lineup:
Belford, McLaughlin, Smith, Sama, Jones, Baio, Ibe, Roddan, Sinclair, Adorjan, Pelosi.
