Tactical discipline, stamina and game intelligence.

Three things needed in a Rodgers side, we're just missing the last piece of the puzzle. Unfortunately it costs the most money to put right...
    Was muß, das muß.

**** me this was one long thread of whining. It's hard being a LFC manager these day's when people expect us to go flying from the first competitive match with a new system, new philosophy and a team that havn't played one single match together under it. Really hope we get a few more positive thinking heads on here soon to lighten the mood a bit, it's borderlining the depressing reading football threads on here these days.

I'm happy we got the win, and Rodgers got a decent start as manager for us. Something to build on for a new manager. It's more or less still pre-seaon, and it's a game to get some fitness and have a look at a few players, and we still got away with a win. I believe Rodgers is using these games to test out a few things and to get to know the players better, and performances will get better when we get nearer the start of the season. And Downing starts the new campaign on form 10+ goals in him this season

            Agreed.

If people want to be negative, at least wait until we start losing! Lol

Maxi was great but never played. Kuyt was on the way down. We haven't lost anything we had last season, we just lost the possibility of Maxi bring used more, which is a loss.

No one came out of that game looking good, but the thing I remember is that apparently, the internationals from the Euro's trained separately for a while from those who came back to pre-season at the beginning. Therefore, the likes of Gerrard, Borini etc would not be up to speed in terms of the training drills that Rodgers uses.

The Bayer Leverkusen friendly will be better to judge, not even the second leg of the Europa League.

"It will take time until Liverpool start playing the way Swansea did last season (tactically)," he (BR) said.
Pedantic I know, but still does my head in this aspiration to be like Swansea.

Using Swansea's philosophy and style + better players at Liverpool = success?

I hope so. I admit to not seeing that much of them last season but were they really THAT good? I remember at Anfield we pissed all over them but somehow drew 0-0. We played the much much better football.

No room for that sort of logic here ffs

Their passing and technique to control the ball and pressing was good, but because many of the players aren't great, they were limited in what they could do.

Their style was similar to Barcelona, and you could see where they wanted to go. Rodgers said in one of his final press conferences there that he'll bring in a number of players to keep things fresh and move them up a level. He had the basics down to a tee (pardon the pun), but what you saw at Swansea wasn't the end product of what Rodgers wanted to build. Better players would've meant more complex patterns of attacking and defensive play. Players with more game intelligence would've enabled better creative opportunities and decision-making.
