How would you manage expectation ?

Recently i felt a surge of optimism and relieve, a feeling of I am glad thats over. I thought that finally expectations have finally come inline with our present predicament. There was a sense of a clean page on a new chapter of this wonderful clubs long history. Off were the shackles of history and expectation, on the wings of a new vision, a new project and an aspiration to play the game like Barcalona. Wonderful.

    Then the season started. Wow.

First game, a combination of a wonder goal ( if its not a wonder goal its a Goal Keeper having the game of his life) some dubious refereeing decisions and a back 5 not totally up to speed on a new Agile defending system and we get thumped 3- 0.

Next game against arguably the most expensively assembled team on the planet, one which won the Premiership last season, whilst we certainly did not play them off the park, we were the better team. Again the back 5 (i'm including Pepe) not quite up to speed with this new system. But hey a very good point and an excellent performance.

Finally we play Arsenal, a team who have a reputation for playing football on the ground with a manager in place for **** knows what 15 plus years (not checked) and they beat us, same way we beat them at Highbury at the start of last season. It happens and again you could say there are transitions happening all over the park to this new way of playing which is not easy.

But hey nothing that cannot be expected, its going to take Rodgers at least to Jan, to get this side playing his way, at least. And its going to be at least 2 full seasons before we see this project kick in properly, IE the start of the 2014- 2015 Season.

But it seems that because we are Liverpool FC old habits or expectations die hard. It seems already ... theres talk of crisis ... talk of needing new owner ... new managers .. new directors of football ...

I tell you what I think we need, we need no change, none, nada, we need this set up in place for 5 to 10 years ... theres been far too much change, too many managers, too many owners, too many players coming a going, we need stability and we need to learn to take our medicine or our lumps. We need to find our supportive voice again, because this sense of gloom and we are ****ed that has cast a shadow over the club is poison.

Dont think you are not having effect on the club, games, players, managers etc. You are, wether you go to the games or tweet your frustrations it all adds up and at the moment the patients are running the ward somewhat.

Personally I think it needs to be spelled out clearly just how tough its going to be, and instruct the fans to help the club come through a very difficult time by being part of the solution and not something which is dragging the club down to the bottom of the sea.

We are were we are, it is going to take time. If Rodgers can achieve what he did at Swansea in the same time frame, we will all be delirous and the envy of the Lg. We need to give him and the players time.

I think Rodgers needs to speak to the fans frankly almost every forthnight and under promise / over deliver ... rather the other way around.

Also any chance we can realize that FSG are part of the family now, they are not vulture asset stripping capitalist like the last lot, they are in the business of sport and they make there money ( because we all have to make some money ) by making teams winners ... not profitable .... but winners and then profitable ...

Lets have the decency to support our people, because they are our people.

Another thing to bare in mind, in the 2nd half of last season we practically had 1 solitary win in the first 3 months of the campaign, after that win, It was almost a month before our next 3 points, we then finished the season out with losing 3 including at home to Swansea winning 2. In total of 18 games we lost 11 and drew 3.

Thats 14 games out of 18 we failed to win.

Rodgers is good, but he is not ****ing Gandalf

Its a sad state of affairs, but not signing a striker has changed most fans expectations from quietly optimistic to frustration with the club once again. You've only got to look at the response from other teams fans as well to see why. They've seriously dropped a bollock with this.

Fans need to accept that for the last 3 seasons we have been a 6/7/8th placed club.
Add in the fact Tony Barrett reported FSG have given Rodgers a target of the Champions League in his 3rd season then that should tell you that this season and next is a work in progress.
4 transfer windows to overhaul the squad, he started by hacking chunks off the wage bill and had we added 1 more striker most Liverpool fans would have been caustiously optimistic.

FWIW i believe we'll add 2 or more new players in Jan and we'll finish the season with enough hope and confidence for next season.
Im hoping for top 8 this season in transistion, top 6 next season then a real challenge for top 4 in the 3rd year.
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

I think you are right ... even the more sensible of fans I worry were thinking ... bollix this is all we need ...

Ever since those two Arseholes from Texas rocked up we have been in the papers for all the wrong reasons... year in year out ...

People at the club need to manage information better, its got a lot tighter but there is still room for improvement.

I think most fans on here had accepted this year was one of transition and the majority had low expectations prior to a ball being kicked. The Man City performance gave us a glimpse as to what we *could* be capable of and created false hope.

If anything it highlights the passion in football and how the heart can rule the head; it's none more apparent than in the immediate aftermath of the 'post match thread' with the initial posts being of frustration, but then you'll slowly see posters come back around and the posts become objective.

Unfortunately (or fortunately if you like variety on the forums), you will always get extreme points of view, but that's more about the modern fan and public outlets to vent their spleen. However, I think it's fair to say the majority understand the magnitude of the task at hand and the majority will afford patience, so I think expectation is being managed to an extent.

                Good post MrNice

Echoes my thoughts & sentiments exactly - I have tried to put forward this case to some of my fellow ballbag Reds at work but unfortunately they are of the SKY generation & have no time for patience or continuity to build

We'll get there under BR & FSG - I truly believe that - it will take time however
What do you mean it could've been anyone? Name me one person who's got a grudge against penguins

It also highliglights what will be achieved with a proper football administrater at the club.
All the papers came out backing Rodgers in this Dempsey debacle and I know from having friends in the broadsheets that they all like and respect Rodgers which certainly wasn't the case last season with Kenny.

We will get positive articles, Rodgers will be given plenty of time and leeway by the broadsheet media which in theory means less hysteria.

Get rid of Ayre or move him back into a commercial role, bring in a Chief Exec who knows what he is doing, one who doesn't treat everyone else from past managers to other PL directors like a cunt and we'll be better than alright.

CEO's MD's by and large are smoozers with strategic vision, natural people influence skills and have a eye for whats important now, next week and 3 years down the line. I really do not think Ian Ayre as impressive as he is in other respects and by impressive I really mean worldclass, seems like a classic case of he who sales gets promoted.

The number of times I have seen the Number 1 sales guy get the number 1 job and quickly become the number 1 arsehole is uncanny

But I digress, I think the club need to take on board the power of internet forums, tweeter, 24 hour sports news and micro manage information which is feed into it. I honestly beleive one of the many reasons Rafa was adored and had people singing his name every match, was he new exactly when to talk and when to keep stuum

The club is doing it's own decent job of managing expectations - we have recorded 6 home wins in the Premier League since January 2012. Out of 21 Matches.

We have won only 28% of our home games in the league in that time. It's truly appalling stuff.
