2-3 papers ran similar stories but none declared it to be "the truth" and they all pretty quickly retracted the allegations.

Playing the victim card just takes him to a new low. If he had wanted he could have delved deeper into this story at any time over the last 23 years discovered the truth and reported it that way. Waiting for the verdict and then issuing an apology renders it meaningless.

If I remember rightly the Daily Star, The Daily Express & the Liverpool Echo all ran stories reporting similar stories

But all those papers stated something along the lines that "sources claimed" or "sources alledged"

His paper peddled it as the "Truth"

The other papers also hastily retracted and apologised for their stories the following day
