Basically that passing sideways is useless and you should always look to play it forwards quickly. Tactical genius that one is. No teams ever win anything with football based on retention of possession.

I can't stand Shearer.... but

In a couple of instances he was correct (only in the examples, overall I think Allen looks a cracking player) and Allen could have shown more drive and imagination. One of the examples he passed the ball sideways 2 meters to Gerrard who played the ball forward, a pass that he could have made himself. Most of the time he was mainly retaining possession, and I don't think you can criticise him for that.

However, to highlight the play of one of our bright lights as the reason we are not playing well I do disagree with, it is not Joe Allen that is a problem within our team.

Having only one forward and no options is quite obviously a huge problem. We are so f**ked if Suarez picks up an injury.

With the same corresponding fixtures last season, we've gained a point.

Controlled the game without any real penetration. Our left flank was stifled at times as Suarez and Johnson kept cutting in, but that will be resolved once Enrique is in.

Borini got a lot of stick by some, but I thought his movement and runs were excellent. Really good to see, but some of the players weren't on the same wavelength.

Really want to see Sahin in this system. Not been a fan of Gerrard in it so far.
