Can't give you a scientific answer but I think they probably did.
The difference in those days (IMO) was that playing for your country was the pinnacle of most players career (and earned them a good few bob) whereas now it's seen as something of a chore - at least by the clubs.
also, iirc there were no caps for friendly games back then either.
removing all the weak links makes us stronger
too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.
“The delivery was brilliant and I was just able to direct it into the far corner.“I celebrated where I did because the fans in that part of the ground were abusing me the whole time I was warming up so it was only right that I went down there and gave them a bit back.
“It’s all about the banter. It was nothing personal. A lot of people on the sidelines give the players a lot of banter when they are warming up.
“Sometimes you get the opportunity to return the favour and on Saturday I got the chance to do that.”
****ing fannies giving footballers grief hiding behind the stewards. Bet they'd never say it to his face the ****ing skunk pussy rats.
Klopp on LFC vs MUFC (March 9th 2016) - "This is why I love football. This is why we watched it when we were young. I can still not have enough of it."
Always, keep your face to the sun, and shadows will fall behind you.
yeah briefly heard them mention the comments on radio this morning though i've not seen qhat he's actually said i did think !"hmm this will go down well"
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do
Players want to play, it's in their nature. Even when they aren't fit they don't want to cry off in case they lose their place. It's down to us as a club and Brendan as a manager to pull players out if they aren't fit. United do it if one of their lads has as much as a runny nose so we need to start laying down the law.
In this case though, it would be a bit hypocritical for us to say he can't play cos he's injured because we have been playing him in our games with that injury for a number of weeks now.
How long does it really take to get over a dead leg?
I think the issue is, yeah go and play in an international if you want. Play 90 mins. But dont come back on the eve of a huge game for your club and say 'Im not fit to train' It is pretty irresponsible, especially bearing in mind he strolled around in a meamingless game for England
The club has given him leeway to go and decide for himself. Gerrard has done the same but he has been up for his training on return. Suarez has been all over the world and come back and worked his bollocks off for 90 mins. It's piss poor from Sturridge and the FA really
Don't make this your new Suarez saga, Sarb. Let it go man
I'm not making a big issue of it. It's a discussion point. He has given an interview in response to Rodgers' comments yesterday. He would play for England if not even fit. But couldnt train due to having a dead leg.
Best chance of 4th this season. Shouldn't be risking it over **** friendlies

Would we have played him in a friendly though or even if it was a cup match?
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?
