Liverpool try to dig deeper into Daniel Sturridge’s thigh injury

Paul Wilson Thursday 20 November 2014 22.30 GMT

Liverpool are commissioning a medical report on Daniel Sturridge’s history of similar injuries after learning the player will be sidelined for the rest of the year.

Brendan Rodgers believes the latest is the ninth injury involving Sturridge’s left thigh over the past few years and, though the England training regime was initially blamed for aggravating the condition at the start of the season, it is beginning to look as if there is a deeper problem.

“We reckon it’s his ninth injury on the same thing from previous clubs here and there,” the Liverpool manager said. “So there seems to be an underlying issue somewhere. Our medical team are looking into it, the latest scans show a slight tear just below where he had a previous injury.

“Daniel is very disappointed and so are we. It is hugely disappointing to be without a player of his quality. Most players you will find want to play through an injury to get on to the field and when the incident happened in training it was through quite an innocuous action. He just flicked the ball and instantly felt the pain, it wasn’t a shot or anything that looked as if it might be serious.”

Rodgers has been investigating the possibility of recalling Divock Origi from loan at Lille early but that could not happen until January and Liverpool would have to stump up an extra £3m for a striker they already own. “For the time being we just have to focus on the players we do have,” Rodgers said. “We have to make the best of what is available.

“You could say it presents an opportunity for the guys who have been on the sidelines for a while. We have an exciting period of games coming up, we have to ensure we go back to our basics and be really hard to beat, we need to be strong and aggressive. Most of all we want to make an impact in front of goal, now there’s an opportunity for some players who didn’t think they would get a chance.”

Rodgers must be thinking of Rickie Lambert, yet to score for Liverpool, and Fabio Borini, a player the club tried to offload in summer, when he talks of players on the sidelines. Mario Balotelli, who has had plenty of chances, is still without a league goal, though at least the Italian is fit for the game at Crystal Palace on Sunday following the hamstring injury he sustained on international duty last week.

So it looks like the recent rumours about Rodgers being annoyed with Sturridge only willing to play when 100% fit are true. You see it's comments like the bit in bold that piss people people off about Rodgers. He has a habit of opening his big trap and saying the wrong thing. It was unnecessary. What are you trying to achieve by saying "Most players want to play through an injury" you tit? Shut it man!

Im with him. He wouldn't have said it unless he though there was a problem

How ****ing annoying must it be that someone who gets paid £100k a week wont turn up to work unless he feels 100%. Wish I could do that at my place.

Twice he's made attempts to come back but he's broke down on the training field on both occasions so what does that tell you? I find it hard to blame Sturridge.

At the same time that's not happening to any other player- which suggests to me that it is Sturridge. He's either made of crisps or its a mental thing

I don't see how it's Sturridge's fault that keeps getting injured. We know how depressed he gets about it, how excited and happy he was to be coming back. I very much doubt he's wimping out over insignificant little niggles (not racist).

It is a bit of a strange comment. Surely if he injured himself in a kick about, and not even taking a shot, he'd have done much more damage on the field?

And not too long ago Sterling was getting praise for standing up for his own health.

Another way to look at the comment is that he was saying that Sturridge was trying to play through an injury in order to get himself back into the first team.

His players on the side lines comment did get a chuckle from me though. Sturridge has already missed most of our games this season and Rodgers did not give much game time to the guys on the side lines, so I fail to see what difference this injury will make for the likes of Lambert and Borini, not to mention the idea of playing two up front rather than persisting with Mario on his own.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

I am not sure I buy this

I have been critical of Rodgers and I think hes made some enormous **** ups this season but not sure this is one

Think people are reading too much into this, the whole timelines of Sturridges injury doesnt make sense if hes pulling a fast one. You dont get ruled out for 6 weeks at a time if you are just concerned about being 100% fit

Personally I think the lads injury prone rather than a malingerer and I think Rodgers just let his frustration get the better of him

Then there is the baffling decision to limit Lallana's playing time despite him being one of his better performers

As I have said previously I dont think Brendan is doing himself any favours

I read it as him saying that some players try to push themselves too much too early in an effort to play and make it worse, but this wasn't one of those occasions. He says the injury was from an innocuous flick on he did rather than him pushing himself too much while injured.

I thought that type of injury is not something that you can just run off, and not resting it can risk a tear?
