Bizarre, but each to their own.Originally posted by brightred View PostI do hate him, don't get it at all.

So there's been no more movement from Barca today? I genuinely don't think they're willing to offer anywhere near our valuation.

For all of Barcelona's boasting of La Masia, Guardiola revolutionizing football, a key factor in all their success in the last 10 years is Messi. When you have a player consistently scoring 50 goals and delivering similar number of assists, you can get away with a lot of things. I think Barcelona are genuinely worried about the declining window of opportunity with Messi.Originally posted by BigChief View PostDemise means different things for different clubs. As far as Barca are concerned being the 3rd or even 4th best club in Spain is a disaster (financially / brand wise, etc). There is no exaggeration whatsoever in that case.
Also every season where Madrid win the La Liga or CL with them not winning the one of the major two is considered a disaster for them. I know in football things can change quickly but Madrid look well positioned to dominate La liga for the next few years which will cause further tension for Barcelona.

Like Man U, they had a lot of players come through together with zero need to spend money. Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol, Messi, Busquets, Pedro and there's probably others. So yeah, La Masia played a significant part of their resurgence.Originally posted by peekay View PostFor all of Barcelona's boasting of La Masia, Guardiola revolutionizing football, a key factor in all their success in the last 10 years is Messi. That kind of youth output doesn't tend to be that fruitful too often.

Philippe Coutinho still a distraction as Jurgen Klopp bids to steer Liverpool into Champions League
By Sam Wallace, chief football writer, sinsheim
14 August 2017 • 10:30pm
jurgen klopp has two games in nine days that will go a long way to deciding the destiny of liverpool’s season, yet everywhere he goes at the moment he is followed by the name of philippe coutinho, the man who is not here in germany to help plot a safe path into the champions league group stage.
In germany, where liverpool arrived yesterday, klopp is treated with reverence, especially at a club which will play its first ever european tie in the champions league play-off at the rhein-neckar stadium tonight. There is excitement at the home of hoffenheim at a famous opponent and a famous returning son of germany, although klopp is in no doubt he faces a challenge as serious as any an english club has had at this stage.
In sinsheim, where the village team of hoffenheim play their games in their 30,150-capacity stadium, klopp moved to dispel any doubt that he and fenway sports group, the club’s owners, are on the same page when it comes to keeping coutinho, absent with a back injury.
There is no question the club’s no 10 wants to go to barcelona, who bid £90 million at the last time of asking. The only issue now is how hard the brazilian is prepared to push it before the window closes.
Klopp was at pains to say that fsg have the last word and the last word is unequivocally that coutinho stays. Klopp explained it thus: “if, for example, there is an offer for a player and i say ‘no’ and the owners say, ‘yes, let’s ask for a number on how much they want to pay’. And i say, ‘i don’t want to hear it’. But they say ‘we want to hear it, £50 million … £50 million is cool’. So then they sell the player – that is how a club works.
“that is how it was with hans-joachim watzke [chief executive] at dortmund. Do you think i said, ‘sell nuri sahin to real madrid as quick as possible?’ it was not my decision. The player had a contract. They agreed. I am 100 per cent, really, 100 per cent [when i say] i don’t ask for things i can’t get and i respect the rules in the game.
“if they [fsg] say they [barcelona] will bid whatever and we [fsg] don’t want it then it is a clear message. We don’t want money, we want to invest in the team and have the best team because we have aims and dreams. That is the message.
“it’s not important what i think. I have the player from august 31 latest, again, or when the back issue is sorted. There is nothing else i can say about it. I think i said ‘i have bosses’, right? I have many bosses, including my wife. I can live with this, it’s no problem. They [the owners] are 100 per cent clear on it. There is nothing else to say.”
klopp is also without the injured daniel sturridge and adam lallana for the first leg against the team that finished fourth in the bundesliga last season and have the country’s manager of the year, the 30-year-old julian nagelsmann.
Of the premier league teams of the era only everton in 2005 and newcastle two years earlier have fallen at this stage, although klopp dismissed the precedent of history.
“this tournament was completely different then [when everton went out to villarreal]. They always change the rules. This is the strongest qualification round. If you go to nice and say a french team never went out, they will say, ‘but we play napoli’. So that is how it is.
“england play germany and you can go out against germany. We were both fourth last season, both strong leagues, so that does not increase the pressure or whatever. We want to go to the group stages. That was our target for the whole of last season and we have two steps to go – but the most difficult steps. That is how it is. Nothing else.
“if anybody thinks because they don’t know about german football or the quality of hoffenheim – and a lot of people are like this, they only know two names … it is clear we have to do the job. I am positive and looking forward to the game, even when i know it is difficult. That is no problem. That is how it should be in the champions league.”
as for liverpool’s european away record, including klopp’s run to the europa league final last year, and further back with brendan rodgers, it happens to be poor: They have won just one of the past 12 games away from anfield.
This one against a team that lost just four times in the league last season is fraught with danger, and behind them are 38 games of *struggle that led to this play-off – the effort of which liverpool *cannot afford to waste over two nights in august.
Jordan henderson, the captain, was one of the few around for the previous champions league campaign under rodgers and he saw luis suarez depart for barcelona.
“it is obviously a difficult *situation for phil. Whatever i say will not help the situation but, as players, we are fully focused on the game,” he said.
“as players, you expect things in the transfer window to happen and players come and go. We have to *focus on the team and the game *together. Of course, if you ask *everyone, they want phil to stay as he is a world-class player. It is a *difficult situation.”

It's pretty clear to me neither Klopp nor the owners are prepared to sanction a deal with Barca. Coutinho ain't leaving this summer, no doubt about it.Never mind Philippe Coutinho, you can't put a price on glory says Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp
Reds boss is trying to put the club's ambitions over receiving big transfer fees

Jurgen Klopp is on a mission to realise Liverpool's “dreams” as he insisted that the club wants glory rather than money.
The Reds boss reiterated ahead of Tuesday night's Champions League play-off first leg with Hoffenheim that Philippe Coutinho won't be sold to Barcelona during the current transfer window.
Even if the Catalan giants return with a third bid in excess of £100million it will be rejected as the Brazilian's transfer request has changed nothing.
Klopp says Coutinho, who missed the trip to Germany due to an ongoing back problem, will return to the fold when he's fit to help spearhead their pursuit of silverware.
“If they (Barca) say they will bid whatever we don’t want it. It's a clear message,” Klopp said.
“We don’t want money, we want to invest in the team and have the best team because we have our aims and dreams.”
When Klopp spoke about Coutinho's future being out of his hands after Saturday's 3-3 draw at Watford, some interpreted his words as meaning that either the owners could still decide to cash in or he wanted to off-load the unsettled midfielder.
But the reality is that Klopp was simply making the point that Fenway Sports Group run the club and with them having already publicly declared that Coutinho was staying put, further debate was pointless.
“It is not that I don’t want to speak, it's that I can’t change my answers,” he said.
“If there is an offer for a player and I say ‘no’ for example, the owners may say ‘yes, let’s ask for a number on how much they want to pay.’ And I say, ‘I don’t want to hear it.’ But they say ‘we want to hear it. £50m? £50m cool.'
“So then they sell the player – that is how a club works. That is how it was with Hans-Joachim Watzke at Dortmund. Do you think I said: ‘Bring Nuri Sahin to Real Madrid as quickly as possible?’
“It was not my decision. The player had a contract. They agreed. I don’t ask for things I can’t get and I respect the rules in the game.
“So now if I said 'I'd sell him' and they said 'no, we won’t sell him', it doesn’t make sense.
“I have the player from August 31 latest again or when the back issue is sorted. I think I said 'I have bosses, right?' I have many bosses, including my wife. I can live with this, it's no problem. They are 100% clear on it.”
Liverpool will have to negotiate their passage to the group stage without Coutinho.
Klopp is wary of the threat Hoffenheim will pose at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena on Tuesday night.
“This is the strongest qualification round,” he said.
“England play Germany and you can go out against Germany. We were both fourth last season, both strong leagues.
“We want to go to the group stages. That was our target for the whole of last season and we have two steps to go, but the most difficult steps.
“I am really positive and looking forward to the game – even when I know it is really difficult.
“Yes, it's big because we can go in the Champions League. We have already qualified for European competition which we didn't have last year.
“I know now people will say 'Yes but who wants to play in the Europa League?' Manchester United didn't want to play it last year but they won it and now they are in the Champions League.
“We can either allow the pressure on this game to increase over the next 24 hours to the extent that we cannot walk any more or we still try to enjoy this opportunity. I think that is the best way to do it.”
