Well there was a story leaked by the club before any bids that we were willing to go up to £70m. It was all a very odd procedure of attempting to sign a player. For me, it was obvious from the start that RB Leipzig did not want to lose their major asset, possibly the difference between a good and great season, and in this scenario, an exception to the rule, you go in with a very generous bid from the off, imo, especially if the player is seen as ideal and if you've leaked to to the press the fact that you're willing to spend £70mOriginally posted by RichC View PostIt's not low balling, we go in with £75M first offer they reject it as we've pushed the opening price up and yes it's exactly the same as any other deal, you go in trying to get the best deal deal for your business as is the case as in all walks of life.
Most deals are spread over the course of a deal there are a few out there that have done up front but they're the exception to the rule not the norm.

And James Pearce on Coutinho:
“I don’t think I’ve ever known such contrasting reports (Catalan media vs people in Liverpool). The people at Liverpool are adamant there are no talks now. No change in position. There have been no talks between #LFC and Barca since the first bid in Hong Kong which was rejected. I just don’t see a position that LFC can justify selling Coutinho this window. Barca’s confidence stems from having 200m to burn. To sell Coutinho now would massively undermine Klopp. You couldn’t adequately replace Coutinho, it would undermine Klopp and be a hammer blow before the start of the season. My only worry with Coutinho is if he’s got Barca in his ear telling him “This is your one and only chance.” I don’t think that would be the case, I think they will be probably be back in for him next Summer where LFC may be more willing. He’s not the type to kick up a fuss and I don’t see him doing so. Its just ludicrous (regarding Duncan Castles reporting a training protest). He’s a different personality to Suarez. He’s kept his council, he hasn’t spoken. If there was a fee agreed, he’d jump at the chance. I don’t think we’ll ever find ourselves with a situation where Coutinho does a VVD. The only way LFC’s stance may alter is if he does do a “VVD”.”

It's not an exception to the rule you go in to get the best deal you can for the club, we obviously thought there was a deal to be done with him and therefore you try to get the best deal possible as you would in any other transaction. £70 m would make him one of the biggest transfers of all time however they didn't and seemingly don't want to sell. Going in with your top offer from the start won't change that they'll just use that as a base to work from.Originally posted by Maxiedge View PostWell there was a story leaked by the club before any bids that we were willing to go up to £70m. Of course they didn't want to sell therefore you have to tempt the hand of fate. Saying you're willing to spend up to £70m and then coming in with a first offer of £55m is all just very odd practice (see VVD).Originally posted by RichC View PostIt's not an exception to the rule you go in to get the best deal you can for the club, we obviously thought there was a deal to be done with him and therefore you try to get the best deal possible as you would in any other transaction. £70 m would make him one of the biggest transfers of all time however they didn't and seemingly don't want to sell. Barca always do this. I don't get why everyone is up in arms. They have a whole media circus spreading what they want when they want. If you tell a lie that many times it eventually becomes a truth. I'm made up it happened to them with Neymar. I wish some other clubs just bought their players release clauses to piss them off and no one sold to them.

If a possibility of a deal happening is on a knife edge, it's possible the seller could be slightly offended by a low offer and/or the first offer makes their mind up for them. Anyhoo, I will admit that I'm speculating a bit hereOriginally posted by RichC View PostIt's not it's an opening gambit to get a deal done i.e. They say no but indicate whether there is a magic number they would deal at, seemingly there isn't one or certainly not one we're comfortable matching
