I'm not sure how anyone could argue that Coutinho wouldn't make a huge difference to our style of play. We definitely need more creativity from midfield.

He would, but we're managing it pretty well at the moment. After the window closes, he'll get back into the team.
      Are we winning?

        Barca making threats now
Barcelona have informed #LFC that they have until tomorrow evening to change their mind on Coutinho or it will be withdrawn.

****ing hell, you can certainly see by their conduct here and the state of their squad why their fans loathe the board there. What a ****ty club they are. Toodle pip!!

Desperate to give these a brutal beating in the CL.

Lack of creativity dampens Liverpool once again

                    Paul Joyce, Anfield

                    August 19 2017, 6:00pm, The Times

Barcelona’s response to having a third bid of up to ÂŁ118million rejected for Philippe Coutinho was to make contact with Liverpool again on Friday and impose one of the transfer market’s more bizarre deadlines.

The Catalan club, in all their wisdom, informed Anfield officials that they have until Sunday evening to change their mind, and belatedly accept the offer, or it will be withdrawn.

In other words, a bid Liverpool have twice told Barcelona not to make is instantly rebuffed and their rivals’ next move is to threaten to take it off the table.

Finally in this saga, the Camp Nou club has managed to do something which served as a source of amusement for Liverpool’s power brokers.

Sadio Mane managed to keep the grin on Jurgen Klopp’s face with a 73rd-minute goal which brought a victory, and felt more important than it should at such an early stage of the season, casting Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic in the role of villain at the same time.

The midfielder was guilty of overplaying in his own penalty area when Dominic Solanke, newly thrust into the fray by Liverpool manager Klopp, tackled him and the ball broke invitingly for Mane to dispatch. Within two minutes, Milivojevic had been substituted by Palace manager Frank de Boer, who continues to search for a first win.

The breakthrough conjured a moment which lanced the mounting tension around Anfield at a time when the continuing absence of Coutinho, officially due to a back injury, can sometimes feel like the least of Klopp’s problems.

Liverpool have grown accustomed to Crystal Palace making life difficult — the visitors had won on each of their previous three visits here — but there remained something about an initially laboured display which came as a jolt to the system.

There was a lack of creativity which blunted attacking intent and a lack of dynamism from midfield, as had been the case in the 3-3 draw with Watford and the helter-skelter victory over TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

Then there remains that vulnerability in defence which would have been punished had Christian Benteke not wasted the enterprise of Ruben Loftus-Cheek by finding the back of the Anfield Road End in the 55th minute from seven yards, instead of the back of Simon Mignolet’s net.

This was probably one of those afternoons when Klopp would have handed Coutinho a deeper-lying role in midfield, yet the unavailability of Adam Lallana is also proving a burden.

Klopp’s problem is Lallana is likely to be out until December with a thigh problem and there is no way of knowing how Coutinho will react to still being on Merseyside on September 1. The smart money would be on the little Brazilian being half-hearted at best and is Klopp really the type of manager to pander to a player whose mind is elsewhere?

There remains 12 days to locate reinforcements and bolster Liverpool’s squad even though this summer was meant to be about bringing in first-choice targets to strengthen the spine – Naby Keita and Virgil van Dijk – not alternatives.

But over the course of the coming months, Liverpool will need more than was on show here. The first 73 minutes, rather than the last 17 when chances started to flow and Palace ended by stationing Scott Dann in attack, should reinforce that to Klopp.

                      They can't be serious
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
