The timing of this release makes me feel we won't be too happy about some other news that might be coming our way in the near future

I thought the exact same thing.

Lol, that's just plain daft. Some said the same in the summer, we wouldn't be in the top 4 if we'd done that.

I think it's fairly simple - To start with ignore all the speculation and bull**** in the media - wait for Barca to bid, tell them it's not acceptable and we do not want to sell him but would be prepared to do so if they meet our valuation and payment terms - if not go find someone else. We are under no obligation save for maybe a promise to Coutinho in the summer but that would be subject to valuation.

That suggests a cash transfer of £105m. It doesn't mean that the 'initial fee' is that? The initial fee should be £130m plus addons. £105m paid now, £25m next season (or whatever) in order to balance Barca's P&L.

          That would be ok

However if its £105m plus addons, they can **** right off

See I am of the thinking that is too low and I would be using deals like those for Dembele, Neymer and Mbappe to guide what price we should be looking for.

For me, we should be pushing for 130m or 140m and then the add ons on top of that figure top of that.

I could see why Neymer would fetch a bigger figure than Coutinho, but Dembele and Mbappe not so much.

The Mbabbe deal that was reported in the media last summer was that PSG can buy him in the summer of 2018 for a transfer fee of 180m, with 145m as the initial fee and 35m in add ons.

That is in euro so 180m euro values Mbabbe at roughly 160m pound.

So that would be where I would be starting for Coutinho.

105 million plus 40m in add ons just seems a bit on the low side ( and nuts to be saying that sort of money sounds low but in light of recent transfers it does appear so, and lets not forget that Barca themselves have played a big part in creating these valuations for players with their own recent buying and selling)
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

You misunderstand my point. If he refused to play that would be his option... He didn't do that after the summer's disappointment. And he wouldn't do it again.

Yeah, I'd like them to hold on and do a deal for the summer but we have an unhappy player willing to go on strike that could upset the harmony at the club. It's gutting but **** the little rat. What is happening is exactly what has happened to Southampton over Virgil so we can't get on our high horse either.

The best option it seems is to get a good deal and bring in an immediate replacement.

Someone whining above that we won't spend a 5th of £300m? We've spent over £160m on players over last 2 windows and are linked with a £90m bid for Lemar. We're not exactly being stingey here.

This is just a case of a player wanting to leave. It happens all the time when Barca or Madrid come in for players.
If Southampton was doing what they should have they shouldn't have sold VVD either. They are small time. And I'm sick of Liverpool being that way. As others have brought up in this thread, how many of our rivals do this ****? FFS, Spurs do a better job of holding on to their players.

And on spending, we supposedly had £150m to spend and used £70m of it on Salah and Ox. We just spent another £70m on VVD. But then we're about to wipe all that out with £150m for Coutinho. The only thing outstanding is our summer transfer of Keita. So I think my point still stands. We are being stingy compared to our rivals. And it's true in the wage side as well.

That article doesn't really say that much - buy now because maybe cheaper than after a WC and keep Iniesta fresher.

The thing is and we have all said it - he will end up at Barca. It's madness to let him join now as even a not fully focussed Phil is brilliant (look at his form so far) and will help us for top 4 and champions league.

If he is that desperate to join and Barca are that desperate to have him then pay what we want (which should be significantly more than last summer) or else **** off.

This media stuff is the weasel Joorabchin and the Barca propaganda machine in full flow. We hold all the aces here, we can fine him and let him train with the reserves etc unless they pay what we want and bring him back into the team post transfer window.

If we under sell him then we will have rightly ****ed up. The thing is I don't think we will, the club is much more streetwise these days and I expect us to get top dollar whatever that number is. The big thing is when he goes.

£55 for Keita also. So we have spent £205m. Doesn't feel too stingy to me. Plus we have spent that £205m before Coutinho happened so we haven't even received that money yet. So an outlay of £205m is stingy? Surely only UTD and City will beat that recent spend?

If we sell Coutinho for £130m say and we pay £90m for Lemar that would make a net spend somewhere around £160m over 2 transfer windows.

                    But yeah...stingy *******s!

                      i'm quite torn by this

part of me thinks **** it - I support Liverpool football club not coutinho or any other 'star'...especially since the torres/suarez transfers and now gerrard has gone and if we ended up in the 2nd division i'd still have my season ticket and go.

If he doesn't want to be here, barca aren't a direct rival in our league and we can get what we feel the player is worth (ie a ****ing ridiculous £150m+ ) then take it and move on

                      but

on the other hand I'm sick of seeing us lose our best players consistently - the worry is as others have said....what happens in a year or so if Real want Salah or PSG want Mane. I'd love it if we could go out and sign say Lemar or some coutinho replacement and then just say to coutinho right, you signed your deal you either fight for your place and try and help us win things or you sit on the bench/ressies for the next four years and then when you contract is up your free to do what the **** you want. Either way we are covered - You little cunt

For me the big frustration is it feels like we have placed ourselves in the market as a club that has a big following/reputation, so if you've got potential and ambition to play for one of the elite clubs but they're not sure if you're good enough/ready, then come to us for a few years - we'll get you competing at a good level and you'll gain the experience/qualities/exposure needed to get where you want to be.

If that's how we (ie the owners/management) see us, that's our place then well we'll never challenge constantly and the cycle will just repeat itself.

I agree, it is quietly fascinating if it wasn't so god damn annoying.

I can see were Barcelona are coming from but they aren't that cash rich, so i can't see a whole pile of movement IMO (if only they hadn't bought Dembele).

Unlike Suarez we got our pants pulled down a bit because of the threat of him getting a huge ban but we should be in a stronger position this year, especially with a WC year (which must be the fifth time i've said this). I can't see Coutinho striking if he is still here in February put it that way.

Coutinho will not play in the Merseyside Derby
Liverpool v Everton (Friday, 20.00 GMT)

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed playmaker Philippe Coutinho will not play against Everton tomorrow.

Klopp told his pre-match media conference "Mo (Salah) and Phil (Coutinho) are not available. Virgil (van Dyke) is obviously healthy, we'll see what we do with him."

Liverpool fans - have you seen the last of Coutinho in a red shirt?
