In the dressing room and on the balance sheet, Liverpool have fallen over the edge, writes Dion Fanning

I f Liverpool thought this season was bad, the summer may have them looking back wistfully. The release of their latest financial figures might shake some sense into those who think that Rafael Benitez's possible departure will make things better. Liverpool, as the figures show, are in great peril. In six months, the Benitez era will seem like a golden age.

Anyway, enough looking back - onwards & sideways we go!
Remember that article well. Laughed at the time, but how wrong was I. It was a golden age, it really was.

The frustrating thing for me is that we could easily have closed the gap and been top 4 again soon after, but I think FSG's lack of experience has cost us (and them) very dearly.

It was golden age. At the time, ever since, and forever more.
      Oh I don't know.

Yet another stupid, neanderthal, archaic football rule. This sport really is in the dark ages when it comes to the rules ffs...
Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!

Fark me you youngsters must be really young. I on the other hand remember golden ages consisting of league victories by the dozen. Everything else has just been meh until we win the league again.

was about to post the same. Not sure i would go as far as calling Istanbul Meh, But then I would hardly call it the Golden age either.

I can't believe how many of our televised matches I've had to miss in the last few weeks since I started seeing my possibly soon-to-be ex-girlfriend.

I think the only one I've seen was the West Brom game and that went well.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I grew up in the 80s so I saw plenty of success.

Those couple of years with Torres and Gerrard ripping up the league were a golden age to me certainly. Compared to what we have seen in the 15 years prior, and what we have seen since, then definitely. OK, we didn't with the league and that's a crying shame. But still.
                  Oh I don't know.

I'd say reaching two European Cup finals in three years, winning one of them, and also runs to the semis was something of a golden era

Certainly for younger folk - in fact people like me too. I'm 35 - we last won the title when I was 12. So in my adult life I'd never seen anything like it. Houllier's treble season came close-ish, but this was the pinnacle of European football and for about 4 years we were one of if not the very best at it.

1965 cup final kicked me off, been nothing but disappointment since.

Me Neither Took advantage of it. Even remember taking a Manc Supporting Mate to the 2007 Quarter Finals match vs PSV IIRC at home. He was in awe of the stadium and surroundings as he had never been, said the walk to anfield was as traditional as you could get, a dump but so 'green street' . We had the game sown up from the 1st leg still battered them and the Kop was singing Bamba Rafa non stop for a good 10-15mins and songs galore that night in the spring evening sun

Took them for granted meaning I thought these nights were a permanent fixture. However, I obviously enjoyed them and hold some great memories from them!

We were obviously punching miles above our weight, consistently. That's what I took from it. We had no right to boss Europe but we did.

Also a lot of people seemed to dismiss the European Cup at the time, as though it was some minor Cup competition, while lamenting the fact we weren't winning the league. To me that was always crackers. The CL is a great competition and even better when you're **** hot at it.

This Europa League lark, by comparison, is so ****ing depressing - especially at this stage. But there are some great clubs left in it so let's try and win the thing.
